While perusing my semi-local Cabela's, I noticed that they are marketing gun safes with "EMP proof" electronic digital locks. This got me to thinking.

1. Can safes with vulnerable electronic digital locks be retrofitted with EMP proof digital locks, if such a critter actually exists?
2. In the event that an EMP were to occur, and the electronic digital lock on your safe were to no longer work, can the lock be defeated for access to the safe contents?

Thanks for your advice!

You can get in no matter if you can work the lock or not. Just look on YT to see how easy it is. The crooks can and so can you.

Let's see.... My safe with the digital lock also has a security key similar to what's on safety deposit boxes, so yes, I could still get in.
(The security key is in my other safe that has a mechanical lock...)

I have replaced several digital safe lock with EMP proof locks. You may be able to have your replaced. It depends on what type of lock you have now and if the mounting is the same.

A call to your local locksmith or safe company may be the easiest approach.

To defeat a non working digital lock requires an experienced safe technician.

I never trusted electronic safes or locks - just my old school nature I suppose. Any safe I own or will buy in the future will have a mechanical lock. Not that they don't ever fail, but to me they are time proven and almost 100% reliable. I have never personally seen a mechanical safe mechanism fail but have seen electronic ones bite the dust.
