S&W treated me right. I sent them a used 317 with extraction problems. Even though they knew I was not the first owner, they deemed it "not repairable" and gave me full retail credit for it. I opted for their Machine Engraved (ME) 640 instead. The DAO pull is typically stiff, but a Wolf kit should cure this. Groups are also average for a 640. I have forever put to bed the myth that engraved guns are more accurate (lol). Seriously, S&W's ME guns seem to fill that gap tween the laser engraved and the spendy hand engraved pieces.
Concerning engraving....yes...I know.....the perp that gets shot with it will have no appreciation for such cosmetics.
PS: A smith at Smith advises if you go for a ME gun, stick with stainless rather than blue. With the ME process, you effectively 'scratch' off areas of a blued gun and set yourself up for possible rusting in all engraved areas. Problematic, says the smith, in high humidity and/or salty atmospheric zip codes. Seems logical.
