engraving hurt the value ?

617 Engraving

This interests me. Please keep updating.

I have thought about Engraving one of my
S&W Mdl 617s.

I know we have several Master Engravers
in Sturgis South Dakota.

The Best to you and your Endeavors.

So my question is why engraving after it left the factory not considered as a refinish, since it would be getting re blued after the engraving.

It has yet to leave the exit doors, so it is still factory finish before selling. If Bubba decides to improve it when he gets it out of the box so it will sell better to his first customer, that's a different story.

YES it does. That CHEAP lazer etching on 3 of my SS mountain revolvers has just about disappeared........So they have become stainless guns with NO ID.
So as with s&w lazer engraving is about equal to doing it with a Sharpie and it last about as long.
i would never do laser engraving !!

i'll keep ya posted i'm leaning to a acorn/leaf design with a squirrel i'll have to talk to the engraver and find out what his thoughts are i'm thinking about 40-50 percent coverage depending on cost ?

Why would someone be concerned about engraving a firearm and losing value?

Isn't that like repainting a new vehicle because you didn't like the color when you bought it.

I understand custom engraving to personalize a firearm but I'm not understanding the issue with lost resale value. Most people who have a firearm engraved aren't concerned about that, as a previous poster pointed out.

I don't have any traditionally engraved firearms, but of the ones I have seen I like the ones that are partially engraved better than the fully engraved ones, they seem to be just show guns.

I have a 617 that I personalized myself, I don't care about resale value because I plan on shooting it until I can't shoot any more and then pass it on to the grand-kids. Also I bought it cheap because the side plate was scratched, I polished out the scratch and added my logo with my CNC machine with a diamond drag bit.

I think if the engraving gives you enjoyment then that's all that matters, I've enjoyed showing off my 617.

i'm not really concerned about value per say as much as ruining a scarce or something that shouldn't be tinkered with and left original and tbh i'm not worried about value in the sense of selling it i'm going to be buried with all my guns !!

I think you're safe with a 617. There are plenty to go around, about a dozen on GB right now. Some older models with low production would get a quick no from me because of collector value. Once engraved I think the collector value is gone unless it comes from the factory that way, IMO, which is worth about as much as Russian Rubel.

What are the low #'s I tried looking for production numbers but kinda hard to find good records if you know ?
Thanks

Lot depends on the cost you spend and the amount of time you put into the project
finding someone to strip the finish and polish the gun
have you seen their bluing ,do they hand polish ,not to round sharp edges,
find a engraver and spend time with them to decide on the design you want ,and look at his work
wait 3-4 months to have it engraved
take it back to the bluer .
cost@$700 -gun, engraving $$800-sky the limit ,reblure and assembly $450-up
add up and see if you can git the money back
Quality cost

FWIW - If you are dropping the coin get what you want and what you like. It is like my daddy always said make sure whatever / whomever you are playing with you like, because you may be stuck with it for the rest of your life. Maybe that makes more sense with who than what!

Engraved guns are works of art that can be used.

I just got the price sheet for Smith and Wesson engraving pretty spendy !
