Which EOTech would be the most practical for a AR 15 and are they better than a scope or are you comparing apple to oranges?

Apples to oranges. Scopes are magnified, Eotech's are not. You can install a separate magnifier for the Eotech.

IMHO, there is not a "best" Eotech for the AR 15. There are different models with different capabilities. Some are for use with night vision and daylight. Some are daylight only. The newer models use a side ways CR123 battery, which lowers it's length.

Personally I've been looking at 1-4 powered scopes. Now that the newer 1-6's are coming out, hopefully the 1-4's will drop in price. SWFA Outdoors has the Optisan 1-4x24 Mamba / EAR30 Mount Combo for $150.00.

I can only speak to my personal experience with my EOtech 512. It's not a magnified scope, of course, but it is a very useful shooting device. The 512 is sort of the bottom of the line and it uses 2 AA batteries, which I consider a plus. I got mine very recently from Amazon for $365 shipped. Good luck and happy shooting.

The Eotech and other red dot sights are designed for close combat - rapid target acquisition under all lighting conditions. The dot on an Eotech is 1 MOA (or less) inside a much larger circle. An Aimpoint has a 2 or 3 MOA dot (depending on the model). In other words, the Aimpoint dot covers the entire black area of a 100 yard rifle target, except for a thin annular ring. The actual size and shape of the dot depends on your own visual acuity, and any astigmatism changes that equation dramatically.

The basic sight has no magnification. However you can place a telescope in front without changing the aim point, and the alignment of the scope is non-critical. The dot is magnified at the same time as the target. A red dot sight is not the best choice if you want sub-MOA groups, but pretty good for hunting at 100 yards in the woods, or self defense.

Aimpoint has a rather expensive ($600) 3x scope with a mount which allows it to swing to the side when not needed. It would work just as well with an Eotech. It is just as rugged as the Aimpoint, fully weatherized and compact. That's probably the way I will go for my AR. I've tried "cheap" before, but "reliable" is cheaper in the long run.

I have the EoTech 511 (uses 2 N type batteries ) on mine with a 3x magnifier. The magnifier has the flip to the side mount. Very easy to use set up to put it in position and flip it out of the way when not needed. When the magnifier is flipped up it fits right over the flip up rear site. Should your EoTech fail, batteries die, ect flip the magnifier out of the way and pop up the rear site and your ready old school style with your iron sites.

The Apples to Oranges comment above is correct.

I have an EoTech XPS2-0 and really like it. The huge advantage to these is quick acquisition of close range targets. You can shoot it accurately and easily with both eyes open once you get used to it. Also exact head placement in relation to the rifle is supposed to be irrelevant (parallax is the size of the sight window). For playing "kick the can" down range (I shoot mainly at a private range, and have lots of experience with this), or actual close quarters combat (I have no experience, just what I read) they are ideal. You can put a magnifier on them (I have a cheap 3x) to get longer range.

For "playing" at the range, or a short range fighting scenario, the XPS2 seems ideal to me. Mine spends lots of time on one of our .22LR ARs for close range fun.

I also have a Leopold Mark AR scope. Starting before 100 yards and on out, I am much better with the scope than the XPS2 + 3x magnifier. Its just a whole different thing.
For the bench shooting I do, I'd much rather have the scope.
Blasting cans and other short range battles:D, I'd rather have the EoTech.

What's better for you depends on your tastes and what you mainly intend to do with the rifle.

Oh, another chance to post a picture of our ARs! :)

512 here, works great and as said, if SHTF AA batteries are going to be a lot easier to acquire/recharge etc. Optics Planet sells some with a 10 yr shelf life.
