EPA to phase out stop/start systems on cars

If I stop at a signal and the auto start goes off I save a penny's worth of fuel for the few seconds its off.

Yet, I can look out the window and auto start my car for 15 minutes, so the heater warms up my seat because my poor widdle butt doesn't like a cold seat. THAT wastes DOLLARS worth of fuel.

People spend half their time tweeting while driving, which I'm sure causes many accidents, when our politicians could easily put a device in a car that would cut out a tweeter if the engine is running.

I must be stoopid or something. We are all doomed.

Hopefully this will provide an opportunity for vehicle OEMs to issue software updates that remove the “feature”.

I believe the owners of the GM 6.7L V8 are mighty close to a class action lawsuit around the auto start/stop. Toyota, known for great reliability have the same scenario around bigger block V6 turbos.

Like bad automotive paint in the 1980s, compelled government action is always a crap shoot on if it works as intended.

I actually went back and read a previous post before replying to this one. My 24 Prius can run 70 MPH on the electric motor and hybrid battery without the gas engine running, It does not even have a "starter motor" or fan belts. All of that is integral in the hybrid system. Even the air conditioner does not require the engine to be running. There is no "cranking noise" when the engine starts, it is actually done by the transmission. My last tank of fuel (10.5 gallon capacity) I went 520 miles on 8 gallons of regular gas (COSTCO) at $2.73 a gallon.
65 miles per gallon 4.4 cents a mile.
I hope this post does not cause people here to hate me. I recycled cars my whole life and drove for free. Had a 37 Ford 5 window coupe in original condition but ran radial tires. Adjusted the ORIGINAL mechanical brakes with a laser thermometer to match the temperatures and effectiveness of the brakes.
This new car is almost unbelievable compared to what I have driven. It kept me awake when I was falling asleep. It slammed on the brakes in COSTCO parking lot when some idiot was going 25 MPH with people and cars backing up everywhere.
Closing in on 75 years age my car is my partner in keeping me healthy and alive. I don't need to be as frugal with transportation as I have been, just like I don't need to drive a 1967 383 Formula S Barracuda like a wild man, burning up 100 gallons of gas a week when it was 32 Cents a gallon. in 1973 just before gas prices skyrocketed.
For those here who can take care of an older car and stay safe, I understand your position PERFECTLY.
I just don't need to work that hard at being cheap at this point in life. I can afford the luxury and safety of my new car. The thought of going back to what I had literally scares me today.

4.4 cents a mile is $4400 per 100k miles.
At 15 MPG you are spending 65/15 times the money on fuel. That's $19000 versus my $4400.
$14600 in my pocket every 100k and this car can go 341,000 miles on the original brake pads.
Your V8 engine burns .5 gal per hour idling. My car can go at least 32.5 miles on that same fuel while yours sits there and goes nowhere. If I drove slowly I can average over 90 miles per gallon.

The earth is warming, we are slowly loosing our protective ozone layer and tides are rising and they are shouting this.....Hummmmmmmm....Look here guys see what we are holding in our right hand and don't look at the left hand..........

Regardless of what you drive, individual vehicular emissions today are 1/80th of what they were prior to emissions controls beginning in 1963 when the first crankcase ventilation systems were mandated. Same year as seatbelts. 2 million people have died in vehicle accidents in my lifetime (just in the USA). Without progress that would easily be over 3 or even 4 million since 1950.

My wife's RAV4 has it and she doesn't seem to mind it. Same with my daughter's CX4. OTOH, I find it annoying.
Good that they're going to phase it out, but it would be nice if the manufacturers could update the software that controls the engines to deactivate it at owner's request.

Of course, they'd probably charge a couple hundred for that.

I have 2 Mini Coopers that have that. Annoying is putting it mildly! I purchased an OBD and Bimmer App and reprogrammed the computer to default to OFF. I can switch it on if I want but I can’t stand it so I don’t.

Reprogramming takes only a couple of minutes and in the process I deactivated the annoying seatbelt warning and reprogrammed a few other features like internal lighting. It’s so annoying to get in your car to move it in your driveway and have to put your seatbelt on to prevent constant dinging of the warning. And by the way I always use my seatbelt if I drive on the street.

How did we ever survive without the gov forcing things on us?
