A couple of "Deals" lately have caused me to wonder if I am right or wrong?
1. A revolver I have advertised for sale or trade:
a. The other party requested that I hold it for 30 days and he would trade me for another model I wanted.
b. After 30 days, the other party has not returned my inquires ?

2. Two boxes modern manufacture of obsolete caliber ammo for sale.
a. another party requested that I hold the ammo for him until he returned in three weeks and he would send the funds.
b. I have had negative response after four weeks ?

I understand situations change but a E-mail, text, or phone call to cancel would be nice, allowing me to advertise the items again would be considerate ?

Unless I personally know the other party, it's strictly as the rules state, and it's cash on the barrel head. No cashie - no holdie. Now if you have a friend or local Club member that you have known for years, that's a different story and I'd at least ask for a deposit.

These days the swindler's have been getting VERY creative and keep reinventing new scams every day. I'd pass on the deal and just trade or seel to someone else.

ETHICS/MORALS, IN A BUSSINESS DEAL?

The old saying CASH TALKS &.... applies here. Sure I'll hold it, until someone else waives some CASH under my nose. It's nothing personal. They would have to be a VERY good & TRUSTED friend. If they left me hanging, they would no longer be on that list. Currently trying to downsize we are giving away for free some very valuable stuff, we could certainly sell, to so called "friends" that either want us to deliver it to them, or hold it forever until they get around to picking it up. I have to laugh at them when they get mad because I donated it because they never came to get it "in a timely fashion", that timely fashion is getting shorter & shorter.

Jimmy, I think your a nice person who got taken advantage of. After too many years of being Mr. Nice guy, I finally changed my business rules. Friend or not if you want me to hold something for you, put up a Non- refundable deposit. I also strongly recommend you have a pro inspect anything I offer for sale. Because all sales are final.

I will only hold an item when given a NON-REFUNDABLE CASH deposit.

Me too...if that deposit is 100% or more.

Let's face it...the time when a man's word is his bond is largely gone. Sure, there are still some decent and honorable people in this world, but they are becoming fewer and farther between. I certainly won't hold something, especially something valuable/expensive, for someone and chance missing other sales, unless it is someone I know personally and respect.

We are starting to sell some things, in preparation for a move (we are downsizing.) There are local, virtual garage sale groups on Facebook, where you can list things for sale in lieu of having an actual garage sale (which we will eventually do, too, but these groups are a good way to get rid of the larger items.) I see it happen all the time where people say they want to buy something, then never actually follow through. I've had it happen to me a couple of times as well.

I just don't get it...I can understand a change in circumstances and you can't complete a deal, or even simply changing your mind, but then you communicate with the seller if for some reason you can't honor your commitment. I guess that's an old-fashioned way of thinking...and in fact, simply changing your mind isn't a good reason, IMO. In that case, honor your word, buy the item, and then sell it yourself.

Unfortunately it's the times. Hard to tell if it's conscious rudeness or unconscious rudeness, but the practical effect is the same. Lots of it around, and it's getting worse.

The odd thing is that communication is easier than ever. I've done a few deals here and they have been models of courtesy and fair dealing.

Heck, even Amazon is far above the norm these days, whether you're talking about buying health insurance or wondering where your package went...So not all is lost.

The last two want to sale ads I've responded to in a local trading forum have resulted in absolutely no response.

Both said text for pictures, and gave numbers.

You'd think someone could scare up the time to respond with "Sold" if nothing else.

It seems that common courtesy is all but dead.

You were more than accommodating. Post 'em back up.

Unless, of course, that trade was something you feel like persuing. ;)

I'd call those situation more like bad manners than reaching to the level of breach of ethics/morals.

Tacky behavior, but unfortunately too common in the internet world...

Move on.

I think you've been more than generous and time to relist as both parties have reneged on their agreement.

I have a problem too but it concerns my brother. He wanted an AR when they were hard to come by and expensive. I had one I built and never even shot I was going to sell and make a few bucks on. Instead I told him I'd sell it to him for what I had into it and hold it for him until he had the money. Well I'm still holding and no money has passed hands yet either.
Family, what can you do about them? Glad I'm not pressed for the money either.

I replied to a gun for sale posting recently by indicating that I might be interested but would not be able to do anything till the end of the month - and that if the seller did not get any one else interested to let me know. He ended up selling it about a week later to someone else.

I've unfortunately have had that problem with a forum member. When somebody tells me they want a leather something and they're sending me a check, I get to work on it right away and let them know when I get it and when I send their product. When I get the check, I send the product.
I had a "person" tell me that they're sending me a check and when I didn't see it a week later I pm'd him to let him know I hadn't gotten it and the holster's ready to go and got no response. I then told him that if he changed his mind, that's cool, I'll just add it to my inventory. It was a J frame holster and I'm sure somebody'll buy it or I just might use it myself, just let me know. Never heard anything. I've since sold the holster to somebody else.
I just would've liked some kind of communication and I'm glad I didn't just take him at his word and send him the holster.

to many nice people get taken advantage of these days. if they won't play by your rules, play by theirs. sell your items to the first person that shows up with the cash.

Business is business. If you offer "lay-away" .... that's your choice. To me, CASH is king and the only thing that "holds" what I've got for sale.

What happened to you has happened to many of us. I learned my lesson.

Jimmy please wait 3 weeks for me to get back to you on this matter. I need at least that much time to formulate a proper response. ;)

By the way...I'm still "ticked-off" that you moved from Tennessee back to Florida. :D

Don

This is why...

This is why gun sellers often go for the sure thing (person standing there with money) than someone that calls and said they would come later.

As others have said, you were accommodating and it didn't work. I had a call to buy an item from me and arranged with the 'buyer' to meet about 20 minutes from me. I drove and waited for some time. No show. Many of us would like to help people out, but a deal's not done until it's done.

Jimmy...was it something you said???

But seriously folks, Jimmy you did your part and frankly, good guys only win in the movies. I wouldn't leave them negative feedback but I wouldn't sell it to them either. I'll take the ammo and I don't even know what it is!

Rick

Thankful that I have only dealt with good guys on the forum so far. I am still hopeful that this trend continues. That said...I don't expect anyone to hold anything for me. Just asking seems rude to me. If they don't mention a "layaway" policy, I don't assume one. Their time and money is just as important to them as mine is to me. Hope your future deals work out better.

im currently "holding" several items for different people...im a little worried now lol. one of them is a 60 year old grain farmer-id bet his word is good.
what really bugs me is an "ill take it" and then a back out two days later .usually your ad is on the third page by then.
