Neumann is correct. If I've been shooting lead I'll stuff a couple of soaked patches in the barrel while I clean the rest of the gun. Then push them out, run a bore brush and start running patches through from there. Typically Hoppes No 9 works for me.

Unfortunitely this is the unpleasant task each and everyone of us face after a day at the range. Its like the party you go to and eat, drink and raise hell, and the next morning you pay the price. So how I clean mine is after I run a few wet patches of Hoppes, I let the rifle sit for an hour then run a bore snake thru to finish the barrel.

I use Hoppes Elite, (dont really know if its better but i like it) i let it set for 15 to 20 minutes run brush through about 8 times, if still not clean ill repeat with bore cleaner and let it set for another 15 minutes till patch is clean. After clean patch goes through i use CLP, run brush( for My own satisfaction) twice and then run patch through to lube bore, look down the bore AND SMILE ;)

Cleaning is a task I enjoy. It gives me time to admire the workmanship of S&W, allows me to inspect the gun in a way that is not usually possible or done at the range, and more importantly allows me to reflect on the shooting and moments of pleasure I have had with my gun.
I won't say it is better than shooting, but it is a fine use of time.

Waiting for the Hoppes to work is key, Im with oneeye. 2 or 3 soppin patches, wait an hour, boresnake, done. Should only take 10 to 15 minutes tops of actual cleaning for a detail clean. I run a cleaning interval, up to 500 rounds , wipe out chamber and upper with a rag, wipe down bcg and relube. At 500 or 600 rounds I'll clean the chamber w/ a 12 guage brush, do the barrel thing and detail clean the BCG (under the extractor and bolt get some lovin) and relube. Pat Rogers and his filthy 14 escapades really changed my outlook on keeping an AR spotless. :D

+1 here on giving the Hoppes No.9 solvent time to work in the bore. It's just hard to be patient.

The hardest one to be patient with is the Hoppes Copper Solvent. I'm barely patient enough to let that sit the requisite 24 hours.

I'm glad I'm not the only one! I thought I wasa little weird because I love cleaning my guns after a range trip! With that being said I use hoppes as well for all of my firearms

Here is what I do, Run the bore brush down the barrel dry no solvent. Then run a patch soaked with Hoppes. Let sit a few minutes then run a nother soaked patch. Remember to only run the patch down the barrel then take off the patch. You don't want all that **** from the dirty patch in your barrel. Run 2 dry patches down to dry up the solvent. Then a patch with oil. Done!!!

I use Shooters Choice. It is pretty hard on bronze brushes though.

Starting with running patches down the barrel will take forever. I soak my bore snake down with CLP and put it through a few times to get a majority of the carbon out. Then I move to my patches to finish it up, it takes about 5-10 passes to come out clean. Done.

When I was young,I worked like hell to clean the barrels every time I went shooting.I don't worry about getting them spotless anymore,I'm just going to get it dirty again,so I go with good enough.I should add that I live in a very dry climate.
