Went shooting today. I was using a 629 , with IL, all was going great, then I tried some new ammo. I tried Hornady Lever evolution. Everytime I fired a round it would lock up the cylinder. I could get it open but it was a struggle.I thought maybe the shells were too long so I tried firing my 629 with only 1 round in the cylinder. It would still lock up. The primers were not backing out. Oh,I also checked the IL and it was not a problem. I fired some Hornady 240 gr XTP, some Federal 240 gr Hydra shock and Winchester 250 gr Platinum Tip, ALL with NO problems at all. Just a problem with the 225 gr FTX Lever evolution. Any help will be appreciated.

If I remember correctly, Hornady's Leverevolution round was intended to be fired in lever action rifles, not handguns. I think I may have even read a warning to that effect. Hopefully someone with more knowledge and experience will chime in.

Well I just cruised Hornady's website. No mention of "not for handguns". They actually show muzzle velocity for pistols and leverguns. Even a pic of a revolver showing the red tips in the cylinder

IMHO, that particular ammo is not 'sealing' well in your cylinder chambers with resulting crud from combustion is blowing back past the shell brass and lodging under the extractor star. That eliminates the headspace and causes the tie up you mention. Solution is to NOT shoot that ammo in a handgun. ........... Big Cholla

Big Cholla sounds reasonable...
...have any of you folks reloaded the Leverevolution bullets in handgun loads and had similar problems? I haven't used them to date, but would be curious if the OPs problem would persist had he done his own reloads with these bullets.

Hornady customer service wants the remaining ammo back to check it out and will replace it. Pretty darn good. I can empty the cylinder and fire other ammo with no problems and the put the Empty lever evolution cases back in the cylinder and my pistol will hang up. it will not rotate with these cases. I know its not a good idea but I put unfired lever ammo in it and it rotates just fine ,being very carefull while letting the hammer down.

i loaded some for my 357 and had no problems. but you do have to watch the oal.
