Round versus oval versus flat?
Shoelaces - Oval, Flat Or Round? - Lace Anchors

Why laces won't stay tied, or the best ways to tie shoelaces?
ShoeLacesExpress.com - Shoelace Knots - How To Keep Your Shoelaces Tied

How old were you when you could tie your shoes without help?
Me I think I was about 5 y.o.? I started school at 5, so needed to learn!
Would have been earlier, but I was too busy pondering important issues!
You know, sliding down a hill on a fattened cardboard box, watching cloud shapes, waiting for my Dad to come home so I could play in the PU bed, or avoiding Mom over some imagined misdeed! 😇

Where I grew up, the town was the home of the world's largest shoelace factory at the time, took up most of a city block. You could always hear the manufacturing machinery running when you came near it. That town was a large shoe making center with three shoe factories - until it wasn't any more and all the factories shut down.

Yes, I have actually given them some deep thought and have concluded flat is best. Here's why. Tinsel strength of laces should be dependent on their cross sectional areas, if they are made of identical materials. A round lace has the least possible surface area for any given cross sectional area and surface area grows as laces flatten out. It would seem that knots tied with laces with more surface area should be more secure. In my book, staying tied is a lace's number 1 duty.

Give me flat.

I wear "sneakers" 100% of the time. Dr. Scholl's gray I buy at Walmart.
Around 27 dollars.
I had foot problems in 2006 that was serious. The Doctors were all puzzled and quacks.
After I found these shoes, I became totally healed.
I have another pair of nice white pair that is for my "formal' wear.
No other shoes are in my closet, period.

I think I was four or five when I learned. I remember Mom teaching me to make two loops, one from each end, and then knot 'em together. It was easier to learn that way. And it was a moment of pride! Yessir. Joining the Big Boy ranks!

By the time little bro came around, a decade later, velcro had been invented. Sheesh. It's been downhill with manly standards ever since.

...breaking a lace here could be a problem...

Got tired of laces wearing out, started using what sailors (airedales) call parachute cord. I think some other services call it 550 cord. It will probably wear out some day, but I've only been doing this for 5 years or so, and see NO sign of wear. Maybe they'll outlive me, maybe they won't.

Sometimes they come untied too easily. If so, I just use a simple square knot instead of a temporary knot. They still untie from the square knot easily enough. I usually wear OD socks to coordinate with the para cord.
