I've been going through my boxes bags and buckets of 12 Ga ammo for my newly acquired pump. I found several boxes of S&B 2-3/4" 00 Buck. It's kinda odd as the shells are almost 1/4" longer than the Federal tactical loads I have. The S&Bs have 12 pellets vs the 9 in the Federal Flitecontrols. Below is a target at 25 and one at 15 yards. They shoot nowhere as tight as the federals but I like them for defense in the woods. Bystanders aren't much of a concern. The Federals will do at 25 what the S&Bs do at 15. Probably the best tactical buck you can get. I think the S&Bs will be good problem solvers.

1/4" longer and 12 pellets vs 9? You sure they aren't 3" magnums because that's what it sounds like to me.

That was what I thought as well but the box as well as the individual shells are clearly marked 2-3/4" and do chamber in my 2-3/4" only barrel. They are not quite 3" long. They load fire and eject without any problems.

The Federals have a folded crimp. Since 12 gauge is 3/4" in diameter, a folded crimp 12 gauge is 3/8" longer, fired, than it is when loaded.

The S&Bs have a roll-crimp. They are about 1/8" longer when fired.

That's why the loaded S&Bs can be longer, and still be 2 3/4". It's the fired length that counts. Not the loaded length.

I've shot a bunch of them. They work fine. They smell like burning hair, though. Strange.

Compare the length of the fired cases. Bet they are the same length after firing.

My GUESS: The roll crimp allows case to have greater capacity and still not exceed the standard overall length for a FIRED case.

Alpo typed faster ...

I noticed that out at the trap as well. They are about the same length when fired.

At an indoor range, the S&B buckshot rounds are kinda smokey. My Remington 870 Law Enforcement tubular magazine, will only hold 5 rounds of S&B buckshot, instead of the usual six. Can't beat the Federal Flite Control -- Low-recoil --- 9 pellet buckshot round for accuracy and follow-up shots!

I have seen LE marked 2 3/4 buckshot that has the higher pellet count of 3" magnum. I decided to load my house gun with #4 buckshot. It is LE marked and has the higher pellet count

I have used the sellier & bellot 12ga slugs and they have a whistle to them. But there very accurate at 50yds in a smooth bore. I just purchased a lot of the S&B "00" buck but i never matched it up yet but its the 2 3/4" 9 shot. For home and upclose personal protection its good enough.

I've shot S&B 00 buck and as you noted it spreads faster than the Federal flight control or any other US manufactured Buck I've shot. This is probably due to not having a plastic wad cup, no buffering material, and likely soft lead pellets. The extra pellets are a plus though.

Personally I feel the S&B is quite adequate for home defense and keep some next to my Fox SXS with Imp/Mod fixed choke if a bad situation arises. As mentioned you do loose a round in a tube magazine pump due to the longer loaded shell length.

Personally I like my shotguns to live up to their nickname of "scatter gun". If I want tight precision shooting my load would be a slug or better yet a change to rifle or handgun. If you have longer than 15 yds free space in your house you must live in a very large house.

I have used them and they appear to me to be well made, inexpensive ammo. I wouldn't hesitate to use them for either practice or self defense.

I have several hundred of them I got in the deal on the 930SPX.I use them for range work, and havn't had any problems with them. Have 00B and #4 buck
I save the Federal LE 132 and the Win.low recoil for business.
