I have a Smith 586 6 inch barrel which is not allowed in IDPA. I was wondering if a 4 inch model would make it under the 42 oz. weight limit?

It is listed at 41 ounces with Target stocks. Be sure any aftermarket ones you put on it are not 1.1 ounces heavier ;) .

Hi,
Here is my post to you from THR forum.
A 4 inch 586/686 will weigh right at 40 oz. If your serious about shooting IDPA stock service revolver I would sell your 586 and buy a 4 inch 586 or 686. The price is going to run in the $400 range and you should be able to get that out of your 6 inch 586. Here is another angle. Look for a S&W model 66 4 inch prelock. Much better handling and balanced better for IDPA. You should be able to get one for $400 to $450 for a good shooter. I have a model 66 4 inch and a 686 4 inch. By far the best one of the two is the model 66. In IDPA your going to shoot 38+P with a floor requirement of 125,000. No need to have a 686 which is heavier and feels muzzle heavy because of the full underlug. If your that serious about IDPA then a 686 ssr would be the best option. But your looking a $700 to $800. I like my model 66 better and can shoot better with it than my 686.

Just food for thought.
Good luck,
Howard
