I just got in my new M&P 40c. First thing I find is it takes an abnormal amount of force to lock in a magazine, compact or full size.

What's the fix?

The fix is to have the slide locked open. Consider how much force it took to get that last round into the magazine. If the slide is closed you have to exert that much force to get the magazine to lock in.

Note, another option is to load the magazines 1 short until the springs relax a bit and "take a set". If you are shooting on a weekly basis that will take about 6 to 8 weeks. If you aren't shooting that often it will take longer because the only way to really "exercise" the magazine spring is to load and unload it many times.

Yup. I have 3 mags. I leave them loaded. I rotate all 3 in the Shield from time to time. I have found they all "settle in" to a comfortable level. Cleaning mags is as important as the gun.

+1 leave the mags loaded when not in use and they will loosen up so over time. My Maglula is my best friend for loading new stiff mags too.
