Explosion reported at munitions plant in Serbia

Touring dynamite plant

Many years ago I visited a dynamite manufacturing plant in Norway. We saw that various operations were each performed separately and had bunkers built up around each. The explanation was very straightforward. If an accident/explosion occurs, the whole plant won't blow. This should limit loss of life and factory destruction. Gave me a bit of a tingle thinking about it.

years ago I saw the bomb disposal trailer here in Florida. Not a box truck reinforced with extra strips of pipe strap and dry wall screws like this one must have been. It was a big sphere woven of heavy steel cables to keep pieces from getting out. not sure how much it would mitigate the shock wave though.

Any details on the fireworks blast? Was the door on the chamber closed?IIRC if and when they " set anything off" its usually out of town or some area without much around.

Having worked in the explosives/propellant business for a long time (Navy and Hercules), I can tell you that buildings where larger quantities of explosives are stored/used are always widely separated and bunkered as protection against a major detonation damaging other buildings and building occupancy is closely controlled. I was present during two such incidents - one at the U. S. Naval Propellant Plant in Indian Head Maryland, and another at the Hercules Allegany Ballistics Lab near Cumberland MD, both in 1961. I helped pick up body parts at Indian Head, as I remember 5 workers were killed. We found around a bushel basket full of parts, most unrecognizable, mainly shredded meat like hamburger.

The purposeful fireworks detonation in the bomb disposal truck was absolutely indefensible. No trained EOD personnel would ever do anything like that. Whoever was in charge and made that decision had to be a cretin, as was anyone who followed that order.

Pic is of about 7 tons of " assorted explosives" set off 2 miles outside of bunker line. Friend and I had guard duty that day , had some good entertainment.
