recently picked up a nice 629 Classic with long barrel, but looks like a part is missing for the hole below the front sight.
Maybe a stainless steel bb?

You have a DX style interchangable front sight. This is where the spring and plunger are installed. By pressing the sight to the rear the sight clears the retaining pin and lifts out.
Makes the bad guy think you have a double barrel.

The bad guy would be so terrified of being pistol whipped with your long tom that he'd never notice the hole. ;)

S&W offers a variety of sight blades that you can interchange with your fingers. 629 Classic DXs were packed with 3 or 4 different height patridges, a red ramp and maybe others. It's a clever idea. It's the least expensive gun to put a fiber optic blade on.

The complete classic series, both 29's and 629's DX's and regulars, all had this sight system.

The DX's came with the entire sight package while the regular guns only included one sight blade.

The sight blades were red ramp, black ramp, gold bead, white bead, and plain black blade.

It's really a nice system. If you want the other sights I believe they are still available from S&W in their parts.
