extractor rod

First, the extractor rod threads are left-handed when that gun was made. The way to tell on every model is to examine the knurled portion of the extractor rod. If the knurling starts immediately from the smooth, round portion of the rod then the threads are right-handed. If there is a narrow, about 1/16th inch, slightly smaller in diameter, smooth area between the major portion of the extractor rod and the knurling then the threads are left-handed! That's why S&W put the smooth band there, as a visual reference to indicate the thread direction.

This applies to all models of S&W revolvers of all frame sizes, no guessing and no reason to ask this question again.:D

For the Model 10 with standard barrel the change occurred with the 10-2 in 1961.

I have an M&P with a LH thread extractor rod. It does not have a groove cut at the base of the knurling. It must have missed that operation.
