I need to remove the cylinder and components of a new Model 63 j-frame 22LR. After new gun cleaning and lubricating, I shot the first 200 rounds of CCI Standard Velocity.

While cleaning it after shooting, I found excessive lead residue packed between the top strap and end of the barrel. Also, noticed brass shaving under the extractor that must be from the brass casing scraping the chamber openings or extractor. 22LR rounds are dirty.

I removed the cylinder from the frame along with the yoke, ejector shaft, springs, however, I cannot remove the extractor from cylinder. I think there is just brass, dirt, etc. trapping the ejector from being removed.

My question: Is there something unique about a j-frame extractor that retains it in the cylinder or can I apply a bit of force to push it out without destroying the cylinder?

Thanks

You need to unscrew the extractor rod in order to remove the extractor. Be sure to put some empty shells in the chambers before attempting to unscrew the ejector rod.

I have removed the extractor shaft from the extractor. The extractor catches on the end of the cylinder and won’t come out. I wasn’t sure if there was something special on the j-frame extractor but I just found a diagram and I see it just a straight-walled tube like my other S&Ws. I think I can get it out now. Thanks

Ok. There could be a burr on the extractor shaft or just gummy, dirty lubricant preventing it from being removed from the cylinder.

Yep, I found a small piece of brass casing and some grime. Anyway, I took the cylinder assembly apart, extended the extractor, then gave it a sharp pull and it came right out. I cleaned everything again and dismantled it again and then reassembled and now all is working perfectly. Thanks.
