I was wondering if I could get a couple opinions on fibre optic sights. I just purchased a 686 and was wondering what would be a good brand of fibre optic sight that would fit it.

Thanks for your input.

"Old eyes" is a problem. I'm in the same boat. SDM's FO front blades are very good, however, what I do that makes the most difference is opening up (widening and slightly deepening) the notch in the rear blade.

I'll agree with the rear sight idea. A .125 inch front sight should be paired with a rear sight with a notch from .140 to .160 in width.

Mechanics grind glasses also help. This puts a bifocal area top and bottom of the lens with distance vision in the middle. If'n you're in trifocal country, the intermediate (about +1.5) section goes up top, the close vision at the bottom.

Agreed. My 5" 625 has a .155" wide rear notch. I also have a pair of "shooting" glasses with a prescription specifically for shooting with iron sights. Not bifocal, but a grind that "makes my arms a bit longer". Puts the sights in the close edge of my vision's depth of field. Fuzzes the target a bit but helps the sights.

Red dot optics are another route.

Old Eyes - Cheap Solution

Received my new SW1911 9mm, went to the range, pistol was great, I stunk!

I could see one and a half front sights, and a really weird front dot. Just for kicks, I put on my reading glasses; I could see the front sight really good but the target was one big blur. I shot at it anyway and got one of my best groups of the day. So:

I went to WalMart and tried on readers. My RX readers are +2.25, so I tried on +1. and +1.25 and +1.5 and 1.75. For each pair I tried on I stretched out my arm and focused on my index fingernail (like a front sight) and also focused on a target about 30 to 40 feet across the store. Obviously, higher power provided very clear sights and very blurry target, and lower power gave less clear sights and less blurry target. I was seeking the best compromise, and for $7.95 bought a pair of +1.00.

I can see, I am happy, I got the best group my 72 year old eyes ever got at 10 yards, 14 shots, 11 in the bull within 2in and all 14 within 3in.

I use SDM front revolver sights and wear "computer glasses" that focus at 4 feet.
I've been shooting at fuzzy targets for years...............

The front sight is clear.

Eyes Again

Sorry for the double post, I only edited the original and added the picture URL and got the double post, oh well.

I tried the Fiber Optic (Dawsons with .4 rods) on my XDM I got in Jan, they really didn't solve the problem which was sight. I saw a red double front sight instead of a double white dot. However, if someone is going to try this to solve an eye problem, I would sure order .6 rods as in Novaks or others. The Dawson are great sights just not for tired eyes, even if they say you can mash a heated FO rod down and make it bigger!

Now that I know the WalMart $7.95 cheapo glasses worked for me I am going to order a pair of shooting glasses from OpticsPlanet. With the rX you want for less than $20.00.

A front sight in focus and target a little blury is proper shooting. The human eye cannot focus on a distant and close object at the same time, its not possible no matter how old the eyes are! That target looks like it needs no improvement to me! :D

Not fibre optics but these work for my old eyes

Glasses don't cut for me when I'm shooting....

these are big dot front and rear sights..The front dots nearly impossible to NOT see...the rear with the shallow v groove makes it very fast to find the front sight..I was loosing the front sight behind the rear leaf before. Those rear sight notches seemed to have shrunk over the years.

Certainly not everyone's cup O tee..but then I don't shoot bullseye..

I found the HizViz set up works great for me with 2 *TWO* colors giving the best results....I like the Red front/green rear fiber tubes. Works fine on a 3 7/8" as well as a 8 3/8" barrel....

Black on black just don't work any more for me.

And I like the BIG front sight in the V rear also. It's just a matter of learning where to put them together....

Wow !!

DRD I think you solved my problem...tried +1.75 and everything came into focus that needed to come in. I found a nice pair of safety glasses that fit over the top of the reading glasses and worked great. Thanks everyone for comments !! :D

which brand of safety glasses fit over reading glasses?

BSkerj: what brand of safety glasses did you find that fit over your reading glasses? I have had a hard time finding a pair that does this comfortably. Thanks.

I have to agree with ERNIE L on using the XS Big Dot sights for self defense. Since I am not a target shooter I find the XS sights fill the bill for me also.

Jeffrey,
I can't give you any direct links from this computer.
But if you do a search under shop safety equipment. Lab equipment. Or hazardous material handing equipment in the eye protection headings you'll be up to your lower lip in suppliers of wear over your glasses goggles.

I'm about to be 70 years old an I have three "reading" glases; one for handguns, a second for a Win 92 20" barrel carabine and a third for a 30" barrel rolling block.- It isn't comfortable to see a blurring target but it works anyway.-

There are several different solutions for the type of shooting one does, apparently. My solution is to have my optometrist check me out with my gun. He works with several shooters, so does not mind a handgun in the office! I balance the minimal correction to get a fairly focused front sight and can still see the target, although blurry, as it should be. I only get correction for the right eye, with no correction on the left. I can wear them throughout the match with no problem. He then orders safety lens and puts them in safety frames, which are a lot cheaper than the designer ones they get big bucks for. I think I paid less than $100 for mine and they have lasted several years. Putting a bigger front sight on still leaves in out of focus, just easier to find, and it covers more of the target. Gotta find the x ring!!

I think the adjustable iris apertures are a good way to go. They have been using peep sights for longer than any of us have been around and they work.

Here is an option:

Champion's Choice - Detail1 - CF10 - CARSON 1.5x POWER CLIP-ON, FLIP UP MAGNIFYING LENSES - Targets and Accessories - Champion's Choice

You might want to call Champion's Choice and talk with them as I believe that they may have more than one power available.

The 1.5X works for me.

Of course, the REAL solution is a Red Dot. After I discovered Red Dots my performance went back to my "wonder years". I am 74 and am still shooting quite well thanks to the Red Dot Sights. Here's one I shot recently (not the best I have done this summer, but a good target for me):

This was shot standing at 25 yards on the slow fire target with my 625-6 (5") with a Simmons Red Dot sight:
