Turkey reports a border incursion by Russia. Early reports state pilot fatality. NATO in emergency meeting.

Update from BBC: Turkish military said two F-16s on patrol had fired on an unidentified aircraft at 09:24 (07:24 GMT) after warning it 10 times over five minutes about violating Turkish airspace over the town of Yayladagi, in Hatay province.

It noted that the F-16s had intervened "in accordance with the rules of engagement", which were changed after Syria shot down a Turkish plane in 2012.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the jet had crashed in the mountainous Jabal Turkmen area of Latakia, where air strikes and fighting between rebels and Syrian government forces had been reported earlier on Tuesday.

Russian military helicopters searched for the pilot and navigator near the crash site in the predominantly Turkmen Bayir Bucak area, Turkey's Dogan news agency reported.

A spokesman for a rebel group operating in the area, the 10th Brigade of the Coast, told the Associated Press that the jet's crew had tried to parachute into government-held territory, but that they came under fire from members of the group.

One of them was dead when he landed on the ground, he added. The fate of the second was not immediately known.

A video was posted online showing gunmen standing around a man in a flight suit who was immobile on the ground, either badly wounded or dead.

Sometimes a predator attacks another predator by mistake, like the cayman that tried to eat the electric eel.

Putin got so used to pantsing the United States that he forgot with whom he was dealing.

The question is whether he wants to fight the Battle of Plevna again...

Putinas head will explode//hopefully//over this. I knew it was a matter of time that this would happen. What a mess.

Not like the Ruskies weren't aware this might happen. They pushed the envelope too far, and paid the price.
As I recall the Serbs tried the same thing with Hungary during the Yugoslav civil war and got at least one aircraft shot down. They were warned multiple times too.

The fuse is lit it's a matter of time when the keg of backorder explodes.

There's news were a group at the airport here side stepped customs. Great.

BBC is running a live news ticker. Both aircrew were shot while descending in their chutes by Turkmen rebels. They are ethnic Turks fighting Asad sponsored by Turkey. Turkey has provided a flight map of the SU24. It flew over a small thumb like projection of Turkey in the southern part of that country. Short time over Turkey means the warnings must have been very rapid and the SU24 seems to have been over Syria when hit.

I tried to order a keg of that stuff from Brownell's, but it was...wait for it...backordered.

Well according to russian news sites they've got new directives - all bombers will be protected by fighter jets and they've got OK to engage any "potentially dangerous" targets. Mud's getting deeper...

Depending on your perspective, World War One and World War Two ended well. Unless you were amongst the many millions who died in the process. Or your country was (1) obliterated off the map, (2) traded to winning countries for other countries, (3) merged into other countries, or (4) all of the above. Or you lost your whole family but, lucky you, you survived!

But, as I said, perspective counts.

The Turk militiamen who murdered the Russian aircrew were chanting Allah Akhbar as they shot the helpless men floating down. One of their leaders was quoted as regretting that they did not get a chance to burn the men alive.

What is today "Turkey" is land conquered from the Byzantine Greeks, who were Christians, by nomadic Muslim warrior tribes.

"Turk" used to be a byword for savage.

The Turks made it all the way to Vienna in the past. They were considered the traditional enemy of Europeans.

Those seeing a coming war between Christians/the West and Islam have little reason to cheer on the Turks.

Russian, it will be noted, is a Christian nation.

Putin's statements about a stab in the back have some validity.
