A report appeared on Wed. Jan. 22 in newspapers and on TV that MLB would increase security around the game by 2015. All teams would require fans to either pass through mags or be wanded upon entry. An MLB spokesman said this resulted from "MLB's continuing work with the Dept. of Homeland Security to standardize security practices..."

Heads up, folks. More travail for CCW people.

That was my thought too. Haven't been to a major sports event in a couple of years (before I got my carry license), but I was under the impression that they were pretty much off limits for carry.

Hi Chief! When I was active, after presenting my ticket, I would 'tin' the security people at MSG, for example, and not be wanded. You're now in the private security area. This no longer prevails?

Those were the good, old days. They will now refuse you entry at MSG if you're retired and armed. MLB will refuse active off-duty LEO's in many places.

No, not at all. The 2004 Law Enforcement Officer Security Act (LEOSA) is widely misinterpreted. It is very limiting. The NRA's legal office recently wrote a beautiful article describing what it permits and doesn't permit. There are broad training and certification requirements that many are completely unaware of and there are many "posers" out there claiming to be certified LEOSA trainers.

It's not that hard to get properly qualified under LEOSA if one does reasonable research, but that's a thread drift.

While the policy is stupid and unethical, I will never be impacted by it directly (it has the collateral effect of encouraging other entities to be stupid, so it is not of "zero" impact"). Events of this nature are violations of the "stupid places/stupid people rule", and I can't see any excuse for being there.

Please see the link to the article posted above. The limitations are in the statute's ambiguity and the apparent willingness of many law enforcement agencies to summarily arrest "LEOSA Beneficiaries," requiring them to invoke affirmative defenses under federal law at trial. This is not a position I want to be in. I hope you find the article interesting. Thanks.

Think the writer is absolutely wrong re: his interpretation that an otherwise qualified person can carry any handgun regardless of the 'type' with which he/she qualified.

For a fact, that it absolutely NOT the case in Maryland. My qualification card, issued by the state, specifically notes I may only carry a 'revolver.'

Have some other questions about his interpretation but need more time to consider a reply, if any.

If the guy who wrote the NRA article is the same guy who wrote the responses to the NRA link:

then his qualifications and intelligence to express a legal opinion are in a great deal of question. The referenced link has so many grammatical errors that the author would have flunked an 8th grade English class. His interpretation is another matter entirely.
I would have thought the NRA could have gotten someone a bit more educated to do their research. I see nothing in his short vita that lends any credibility to his inner knowledge of the topic.

I saw an article linked from the FBI LE Bulletin that claimed that LEOSA is an affirmative defense. It is not, and as shown by one of the cases cited in the policeone.com article, an arrest of someone covered by LEOSA is going to be a civil rights violation.

Even if I could still travel I couldn't afford the ridiculous cost of attending a major league game. I love baseball, always have (my dad pitched in semi-pro ball and one of his brothers was a pitcher in the Cardinals organization), but I'll stick with the AAA and college game.

As for fan behavior, hey, it might be worse. It could be Brazilian or Liverpool soccer, where attendance figures have to include the dead and wounded.

But at any major sporting event, if I can't carry I would certainly want LEO's to be able to.
