Factory Nickle K22

Thought I would share some pictures of my Nickle K22
I would have posted sooner but I find this gun incredibly hard to photograph well enough to show how nice it appears.

Oddly it does not letter with target grips.

Note the serial numbered cylinder and bbl.

Since I have been taking pictures so long for this gun trying to learn it has worn a fair number of target grips. Trying to find just the right set for this gun is not easy for a grip guy like me.

That is a gorgeous K-22. It would be a centerpiece of any Smith fancier's collection.

BTW, I like the smooth Rosewood Target stocks on it best.

LOL Actually that is a piece of felt used to roll up puzzle pieces. I was experimenting with different colors to see if it affected nickle pictures.

I am glad you posted pics of your Nickle 17-3 I never get tired of seeing them.
Also seeing pics of both factory nickle guns in one thread shows some of the differences they have. Especially the front sight.

Don, I have been loving those Roper grips for a long time. I didn't realize they were K frame.

Now the Magna set needs a sweet 4 inch prewar Outdoorsman.
Do you know anyone who has one?

I did not know S&W made the K-22 in nickel. What about the other two in the series- K-32 and K-38? Did they make them in nickel also?

Letter says this was a special order. I don't think it was offered as a standard finish.

But that would be a top10 of all time a collecting coup to have all 3 in nickel.

Third picture down, smooth football Targets in Rosewood (or whatever wood) gets my vote. Maybe a different background, but the dark against the nickel is very appealing to me.

What's up with the front sight?

The K22, K32, and K38 Masterpiece and the 22, 32, and 38 Combat Masterpiece revolvers were cataloged as being available in blue only, but could be special ordered with a bright blue or nickel finish. In 1954, the list price of a standard K22, K32, and K38 Masterpiece and the Combat Masterpiece revolvers was $71.07. Finished in bright blue or nickel, the cost was $77.53.

I suppose it is possible all calibers exist in nickel, but there is no way to know for certain.

I know there is no way to tell, but wonder how many factory nickel K22’s were done? I own an aftermarket one that I like a lot. I wish it had your front sight! I also wonder if the gun was ordered for the owner of the hardware store,or a special customer, or just to sit in the display counter until somebody smart bought it?

Those nickel K-22 guns are absolutely grail guns. What's not to like about them, grips or none? Having the box, too, is outstanding; with a letter to boot.

Mentioned the box because I thought only magna grips would fit in a four-ring box of that caliber. Targets would not fit, or just not mounted on the gun. No surprise about the grips being magna to me. If you swap the grips, make plenty of tracks leading back and forth to and from the gun, grips, and box. I like the rosewoods, but would wrap them in the box with it as is until show time. Just me thinking aloud. Great guns!

I actually like the magna woods in the 1st pictures, after getting past looking at the factory nickel gun. If they made magna grips with the wood on the green towel, that would be interesting. Either way, I wouldn't kick it out of the safe for eating crackers! I would be impressed seeing the nickel K-trio displayed on my wall!
Very interesting revolver you have there. I see smoke coming out of my wallet; I think my credit cards have "awoken up!" I guess beautiful would be the simplest adjective to describe it.

The salesman who took the order for the K-22 in August 1957 was Kelly Lookabaugh. He, as was his father, were representatives for S&W on the west coast.

I have been keeping an eye out for any others just to get an idea of what they might be bringing but all have been newer and model marked.

I don't recall seeing any pre-17's in Nickel, perhaps a member here has seen or owned one. A few of the Nickel 17's I have seen have the RN stamp on the grip frame indicating a factory refinish. The gun pictured in the original post is obviously factory original based upon the N stamp on the barrel. You may also find an N stamped under the extractor star.
