Of the 3 Model 28's I have owned, all were of a semi gray color that either had not been buffed or a parkerized finish.
It is possible that Smith and Wesson would, at your request nichel plate your 28 for you.
It sure looks better than "out of the box" ones.

I have been offered, by 3 different guys, 3 nickel 28's in the past year. NONE were cylinder N stamped, don't know about frame.

I believe that a factory nickel will also have a blue ejector star? is that correct? I had a nickel M-57 with the blue ejector star and was told that is factory correct.

Don't go by the N stamp, I believe these weren't stamped.
However; of the three you've been shown it's about 99.99999 to 100 that they are fake. Back in the day it was common to nickel 28s, so I'm told. Of the many many, including one of mine, that I've seen lettered here on the forum over the years, not one has turn up as factory nickel, sad to say.

I had it explained to me years ago that since the basic difference between a Model 27 and a Model 28 was the level of finish, and since polished nickel is polished nickel, the factory reserved nickel finish for the "higher priced spread." Made sense to me... why give the deluxe treatment to the base model? YMMV

I have handled a factory 28 nickel that even had the box that stated nickel on it. It was one of 3 that a local collector had and sold one to my shooting buddy, kept one and sold the 3rd. All 3 were with the box. The gun was never fired and is "as new in box". It is in the hands of a serious collector.
