Factory & 'Non-' Mags, I want to hear your horror stories and positive testimonies.

I have 1 factory mag for my 5906 and 4 Mec-Gars: the Mec-Gars work great, 100% reliable. I need to grab a few more and a couple of 17-rounders.

An aside, I'd like to find one of the 15-round adapters for the lone S&W factory mag and use it for my 6906, does S&W still sell those?

I have some Berretta 92 mags that are starting to fail and only hold 7 instead of the normal 10 count. Unfortunately Berretta will not deliver to Canada at all even tho they send us their sales flyers all the time. They seem to have some very backward rules about their shipping policys in my mind.

I have a 20 round and 15 round Mec-Gar mags for my 5903TSW and they have all been flawless so far. The problem is finding more :). Anyone know where to find any currently for under $35? ive looked at more than 10 online stores that say they are currently out of stock. My friend has a promag 20 for his 910 and it has never worked right... Stick with factory or Mecgar IMO

Midway has 20 round mec-gars in stock right now, under 30 bucks!

MecGar mags are pretty much the only aftermarket mag that I would consider. I've used the 17 round mags in a 5944 for years and they have been flawless.

ProMag, Eagle and Triple K are all junk, IMO. Not good magazines and not heavy enough for a boat anchor. Cheap, offbrand mags are almost always a false economy.

I haven't much of an opinion on 1911 mags, though.

I have several MecGar mags for my 3rd Gen 9mm's. Some are 15 round and some are 17 round, some are blue and some are nickel. All of them have been 100% reliable.

I also own a half dozen or so ProMag's for my 4506-1. I had never had good luck with ProMag and would never have bought them if they weren't on clearance at a LGS. For $5 each I figured what the heck. To my surprise they are quality made from stainless steel and have been thoroughly reliable. This prompted me to buy a ProMag for a 3914. Also ran just fine. I don't run around and tell people to buy ProMag with confidence, but in my opinion their single stack mags do not have the issues their double stack mags do.

Besides, a range mag that malfunctions from time to time is good for keeping those clearing a malfunction skills fresh!

If you cant find factory mags or if they are over priced go with McGar. They make a lot of aftermarket mags and for some hand gun manufacturers they are the factory mags

MecGar actually makes OEM mags for several manufacturers. Use with confidence.

For my Rugers it's factory mags only.

Many of the problems attributed to the SIG Mosquito are from (among other things) cheap aftermarket mags. Genuine METAL only.

IMO Wilson Combat 47D 1911 mags are overpriced & overrated. My MecGar & Checkmates work every bit as well. Using an 8 round magazine in a 1911 risks invoking the wrath of the ghost of John Moses...

ProMag are generally junk.

As an answer to my own aside, S&W currently has the grip adapters in stock for the full-capacity 5906/4006 mags to provide a grip extension when used with the 6906/Shorty .40, I just ordered a couple. CDNN also has 17-round Mec-Gars in stock, blue and nickel, for the 5906 for 24 and 25 bucks respectively.

Looks like the 5906 and 6906 are going to the range next weekend!

Best mags, factory or Mecgar, the only way to go.

Worst experience with mags was with USA Brand 20 round for M1/M1A. First loading and fireing I had a few FTL. Second and supsequent loadings were ****. Mag bodies had bulged, lips bent... I got so frustrated with them I placed them behind the tire of my truck and crushed them just so someone wouldn't pull them out of the trash can at the range.

I almost always stay with factory mags, or else Mec-Gars if I can't find the factory ones. I learned long ago not to trust those cheap Ram-Line ones. I do have one Pro-Mag that came with my 915, but while it has worked okay so far I use it only for the range. However like so many other folks my worst experiences with cheap mags have been with 1911s. I've bought the Chinese ones disguised as genuine GI surplus, and soon used them up as targets. I also tried early Shooting Star mags, and gave up dealing with their tipsy follower and converted them into 7-rounders instead. For a time even the factory Colt mags had issues, coming from a vendor who used thinner gauge steel than what Colt once used back when they made their own mags. Currently I only trust Wilson, genuine GI, or the new Colt mags made by Checkmate.

Oh by the way, the absolute worst mags I ever bought? Triple-K replacements for an old Colt .380 Pocket Hammerless. I never got a single round to feed out of them and quickly sent them back! They didn't even fit properly, and slopped around inside the pistol.

I use factory magazines in anything I own. The only time I use non factory is for any of my 1911. If it is not factory it will be a Wilson Combat.

Sincerely,
THE ROLLING STONES

The exact same with me, right down to the Wilson mags in my 1911.

I just can't force myself to use aftermarket mags. It's only money.
