I went to the range today with the sd40 to try out 3 more brands of ammo to see what it likes. I brought some tula 180g, federal champion 180g, and some fiocchi 165g, all were fmj. Then the second full mag of tula had a ftf. The round went partially into the chamber, right angle and everything, and the rim stopped at the bottom of the extractor. Thought maybe it was the cheaper tula, so I ejected the round, reloaded and continued just fine. Ended up having a few more tula's doing this and maybe 1-2 of the other brands. The gun was clean already had over 100 rounds through it from before. Is this a break in problem or is it a service issue?

Id blame Tula ammo. Check your mags for any defects. Could be you just getting used to the gun. Maybe a grip deal if your not used to shooting these style of smiths. Cant limp wrist them.

I did notice the tula bullets had a bit of a "step" in them, not smooth like the other fmj's Ive shot. I didnt notice if I was limp wristing, but can that make a difference like that?

Stick with USA ammo. I find Federal to be solid and I shoot Champions for targets.

You may need a slight chamfer where the ramp meets the chamber. Call S&W and they will do it for you.

Looks like its going to s&w. Just got off the phone with em, described the problem, he said send it in. Sucks but oh well I guess.

I had a bunch of failures to load/chamber on my 6906 caused by the ogive on my reloads touching the rifling, even though the overall length of the round was to specs. Seems that particular bullet was shaped a little differently than others which chambered normally. I seated the bullets a tad deeper and that solved the problem.
Your FTL sounds a little different.........but, who knows?

I am also having this same problem with my gun. I will wait till I bring home my new M&P 15 before I send if off just so I wont be weaponless.. Or maybe I can find someone local to make the repairs if its simple.

Just got it back a few minutes ago. The paper said barrel mod and replaced extractor. It does look like they took a dremel to the feed ramp area.

Please take it to the range and fire the ammo you had an issue with and see if your problem was corrected. Looks like I'm in the same boat and I want to make sure your problem was fixed before I send my in. Thanks

I'm doing the same. Dont want to go defenseless. Just picked up my new Glock 23 last week. So now it's safe to send the SD off. Giving them a call soon. expecting to love the SD genuinely when it returns.

I think I may be running into the same or similar situation. After a few rounds, the slide locks back after almost every shot. Fire, lock back, release, fire, locks back, release, fire, locks back, release and then can fire again. Doesn't it do it every time, but almost each and every time.

I first thought I was limp-wristing it, but that is not it. Seems to happen after 3-4 rounds have been fired and the pistol heats up. Thoughts?

Check the recoil spring make sure it's not broke, and try a different ammo.

Found the problem...the slide release spring was not positioned correctly, I guess. The spring must have been in a bind and was tensioning the slide release upward instead of downward. So the slide release was actually trying to stay upward instead of staying down until being pushed upward by the empy mag. Re-installing the slide release was the biggest challenge I had when I installed the Apex trigger kit. And again, installing the slide release was once again the biggest challenge after just tearing it down again, once I determined what the problem was.

Here's to happy shooting...damn the ammo prices!
