A guy maybe wants to trade my ruger stainless gp100 with adjustable sights and 4" barrel for a sw 4566.he says his gun is excellent but has no box,no paperwork, just 2 mags with orange followers, mine is too,its only had 200 rounds down the pipe.my ruger is as it came from factory, box and all.

So would this be a fair trade,I have no idea what a 4566 is going for.but i have 550 in mine.

Also, how are these 4566 as far as reliability, accuracy?

Hell yeah it's fair. Rugers can be had all day long for less than $500. A 4566 in excellent shape is worth it.

Dollar for dollar it is probably not a bad trade but I don't think I would do it. A lot of the 4566 guns out there are police trade-ins. You said your gun is almost new. I would hold onto the Ruger and wait for a good deal on a 4566. They are always available on Gunbroker and sometimes a good deal comes along.

thanks, looks like he changed his mind anyhow.I saw some 4566 pistols for sale $362 and $420 at a site, ffl cost, this am.It might have been some auction sites, not sure. They were police turn ins.

I sure wish smith and wesson had kept the 3rd gens on the production line like the 4506 and the 4006.Theyre a heck of a well made gun.

There was some issue with the mag followers and I don't recall what color ones were problematic. Mine are black and work fine.

Good Trade for YOU

The GP-100 SS adj sights 4" barrel is a very nice gun and they bring $500 all day in excellent condition.

The 4566 is also a very nice gun and in excellent condition $500 is also a good price, with many bringing $550 or 600 in excellent condition, sometimes a little more. However, there are a lot of police trade in 4566's available that can be had in the $ 400 to $ 450 range but they will not be in comparable condition to the gun you described.

If you can get a 4566 for $ 362 in any kind of decent condition, that would be steal. Like one other poster suggested, if you don't need the 4566 to be in excellent to like new condition, then keep the Ruger GP-100 and pick up one of the 4566 trade ins.

Much like the Ruger 357's the 4566 is built like a tank and all of the trade ins I have seen had some cosmetic scratches, but still shot like a new gun. But there is a big price difference between a private one owner 4566 in excellent condition and in a police trade in.

In comparable condition your trade would be a pretty fair trade in my opinion, with you getting a little the better of it. However a used SS 4" GP-100 with 4" barrel is a little more difficult to find.

I would be happy carrying either handgun for self-defense and in fact own both only my GP-100 is blued. It just gets down to if you want a totally reliable and outstanding revolver or if you want a totally reliable and outstanding semi-auto loader. The superior S&W warranty and the greater fire power of the auto-loader would push me over to the 4566 if I could only have one or the other.
