Fake Boxes?

I have been reading (on a Colt forum) about new made/reproduction/fake Colt boxes, hang tags and papers that are being sold on GB and eBay. Some sellers seem to be selling "NIB" Colts where the boxes are not original. These box copies are elaborate, look pretty good to me and would easily fool me--not being a Colt box expert. I have heard about repro S&W SATs. Is anyone seeing repro/fake Smith & Wesson boxes? How can I identify the repro SATs? Thanks.

Never heard of there being fake boxes out there...what will they think of next? On the other hand, a nice new reproduction box for some of my old revolvers might be nice for storage purposes, if they were reasonably priced.

Do a search on this forum. There have been discussions on how
to ID a fake S&W SAT screwdriver. I was bidding on one late
last year on Ebay that turned out to be a fake. I read a thread
on this forum on how to make sure they are real. I ended up
cancelling my bid, and the seller pulled the item.

there have been reproduction Colt boxes for many years now, at first the two piece boxes, wood grain ,but you could tell by their interiors, no dividers and the wrong color, then there were the black older boxes, hinged, had been for sale on e-bay for quite some time, the guy ,who I happen to know NEVER said they were "fake" , was up front as they were "reproductions" and the copies of the end labels were terrible to say the least, and now there are some being faked, and passed off as real coming out of China,but sold here, and they are copying it all, the styrofoam, the booklets ( owners manuals) I am really surprised Colt has not gone after these, (copy right infringement?) as they are a "blatant" fake and rip off, not a bad job really but again, the colors are off ( wrong) and the paper is total off as well as the finish of the paper...
as for S&W I have never seen in all these years any one "fake" or repop the boxes, figure its gotta be tough with them metal corners, but hey, if there is money to be made, it is a matter of time...these third world countries will do anything for a buck,,,,,yes, the white end labels are all over the place, as well as copies of the older owners manuals,but again,, the color, of the paper , and of the print and their 'style' can be spotted quite easily.....it's one thing when you do something for your own "collecting', maybe displaying, and want to 'tag' a box for one of YOUR guns, BUT somewhere down the road, our heirs are gonna have a hard time knowing ,telling, passing off the stuff we have around today, and NOT "screw" someone .unintentionally or maybe on purpose, with "malice and aforethought" and there is the rub, and there is the 'crime'.............. caveat emptor baby

there is money in colt boxes and that's why they are being faked. just wait, the s&w boxes will be along. I am surprised no one is faking registered mag boxes yet. what would a triple lock target box bring these days. whenever there is money to be made, the fakers are out and about. buyer beware and know what you are buying.

Fake Winchester,,AH Fox,,LC Smith boxes all from certain eras of course. Along with factory invoice paper work in some cases, packing paper, hang tags, ect.
Not all the oldees have factory records available. But surprisingly (!) some form of factory correspondence may just happen to be available to accompany that special order looking rifle or shotgun that looks NIB but isn't listed in the records available at Cody.
There's big money in a piece of cardboard or paper if it's the right shape, it looks right and says the right things.
Be careful,, then doubt.

Re-pro Colt boxes and end lables have been around for some time too.
The lables are rather casually sold at some shows on large spools of all the different offerings like Priority Postal Stickers. Pick out the Model you need and tear off the number of lables you want and pay the man.

Repro Savage pistol boxes have been around for quite a while and represented and sold as such.
But they can get turned around, re-sold to a less than knowledgeable buyers which is the problem with any restoration or reproduction.

Older S&W boxes are harder to fake because of the metal corners, embossments etc. but as the prices go up expect to start seeing them. For years now people have been offering fake labels so you could make an "original" box for your 1960s – 70s S&W.

The FAKE Colt boxes have been a major discussion on other Forums and by now most Colt Guys know about the guy selling fake boxes at absurd prices. There is currently a "movement" that is trying to stop him, but the best way is from a lack of sales!

Unfortunately, I'll bet there are still people who get stung by this Fraudulent Seller, but then again fraud and scams are all the rage these days. When ever an item becomes collectible or popular - the Scammers go into high gear! Guns are certainly no different!
