I have 7 powder set ups ready to go for my 550.

I have been seeing those turn knobs for powder adjustment.

Junk, waste of money or good for making micro adjustments?

thanks in advance

I have one of those for my 550. It is on the dies for the 22 Jet rounds I reload. I have set it, and haven't adjusted it in over five years.

The powder measure came from my uncle. He had it on his 38 Super dies for about four years, and he never adjusted it either. He thought it would be great for fine tweaking of loads, but once he found the bullet and load he liked, he is a competition pistol shooter, he never adjusted it either.

Just my two cents.

If you're referring to the plastic press on knobs from the home center, they're handy enough. I have one on each of my measures and it keeps me from having to pick up a wrench to change the settings. For the price, why not?

If you're referring to the machined "Mr. Dial" type, the cost / benefit equation doesn't work for me.

If your looking for some really fancy knobs with micro adjustments that actually work check out the one from Uniquetek.com

Home Depot has them. Look in the hardware aisle in the trays where they keep the corks and axle caps.

imashooter2,

thanks for the pics. I am going to H/D this weekend.

one is marked round and the other says flowerette. I am assuming both have knurling to ease gripping for easier turning?

Knob 5/16 White

The round one is smaller OD and has a coin type reeded edge. The flowerette is larger OD with a smooth edge, but has small depressions molded into it making it appear to have small flower petals. The bags are clear on the other side, so you can see what they look like before you buy.

I have both, I've used both, and prefer the round. I did scratch a groove from center to edge with an ice pick and fill it with a magic marker to provide a reference point on how far its been turned.

Imashooter.....

My luck H/D does not have a clue. The numbers on the bag did not help them either.

What is on the back side of the knob?

Meaning.....what's the connection to the powder adjustment bolt head?

I found the axle caps and corks.....but no knobs!!!!!!

Thanks in advance

It's a plastic recess that presses over the bolt head with a snap fit. In every HD I've ever been in, the hardware aisle has a couple cabinets next to the bags and bins of lag screws and cut washers. These cabinets have the specialty hardware (axle caps, corks, clevis pins, hairpins, etc.). Those drawers are numbered. Inside the drawers are divided into bins. Those bins are lettered. It's not easy getting real service in the big box stores, but worst case, the SKU numbers on the bags are in their computer. Make the customer service counter look it up and walk you to them. They absolutely do carry them:

Total cost: under $4.50
Results: excellent
You'll need to go to a larger HD store. I was in 3 before getting the store that HAD them....the other 2 were able "to order you some"....

When I was looking for them HD didn't have them either and no one there had ever seen one. I got mine at the local True Value hardware store; they had them in the metal pull out drawers. For installation I dropped the knob in boiling water and it then just slipped on. As I recall it was less than $2.

Don't listen to the guy in the orange apron saying "Nope. Ain't got nuttin' like that." because they do got sumpin' like that.

I've read, but cannot verify that Ace Hardware also carries them.
