Fat Bear Week
This year's competition runs from Oct. 4 through Oct. 10.

But ever since the sockeye salmon run began on the Brooks River this summer, the bears have been feasting — and ballooning in size. That means it's time for Fat Bear Week, when fans of famous behemoths like Otis, Holly and 747 will vote for the plumpest bear in the land.

You know there are "emos" that watch the bear's behavior, anthropomorphize, and think: "If I go there they will love me!" Yeah, for dinner. Love them bears, been watching them for lotsa years. Joe

Ha! I saw some signs of a young bear on my favorite hiking trail a few miles from my house this week and a fellow spotted two mtn lions in his backyard a mile north of there. They’re moving into the burbs with the rest of us ;-D

We have a similar event, but with bald eagles, just up the Fraser River near me. I haven't been to see them for several years, but it is an impressive scene. As is the smell...

World's largest congregation of eagles begins in the Fraser Valley

About 35,000 eagles gather in the lower Fraser Valley between November and February

David Hancock, a biologist who has been studying eagles for about 65 years, says the world's largest congregation of bald eagles happens on the river in the little community of Harrison Mills, about 100 kilometres east of Vancouver.
"Last Saturday morning [2018] I did a survey off the river and there were just over 7,000 eagles in the area," he said in a recent interview.
