Fatal Bear Attack in NJ

A hiker, one of a group which fled from a bear, was brought down and killed by a large male in the Apshawa Preserve in NE New Jersey. The state has had many close calls with bears but this is believed to be their first fatal attack ever.

I was carrying a Glock 26 the one time my wife and I encountered a bear hiking, maybe three years ago.

Now I carry a S&W 1006.

It seems that in N.J. you're at the mercy of the bear.
You don't dare carry a gun for SD and if you do, you don't dare shoot a bear( or anything else)

I've been in those woods all my life and bears have been a real problem for at least the last 7-8 years. The attitude is always, they won't bother you, blah blah blah. Every year the loonies protest the bear hunt, I hope this wakes them up to the fact that they are a real threat.
Ancient history, when I was a kid there were no bears in NJ. Now we are overrun. Time to increase the annual bear hunt quota. The last thing NJ needs is another apex predator we have enough of the two legged variety already in all our major cities.

We're overrun with them here in MA since the loonies managed to pass a ballot question banning hunting with hounds. We get the same "they won't hurt you" pablum treatment. My wife's Facebook friend posted a video today of Yogi at a bird feeder here in town. Just a matter of time before someone gets killed here, too. Tick-tock.

We had a big male at 30 yards a week ago..right off of our deck. It was just getting light and all I got was his Butt going away for a pic..My wife and I live in rural MT, and go nowhere outside without a M&P. It is part of country living..Having two big male Chessies doesn't hurt either, but yes they can be as deadly as any other four legged critter!

Back in the late 50's in Old Tappan near Westwood and Paramus New Jersey my two older brothers would caddy on a golf course there. They rode bikes to get there early in the morning. They had run ins with bears back then. It's probably out of control by now for sure.

I have a local 350/400lb male in my back yard. No hunting them yet too.

I carry a 338wm when bear hunting. They hate this rifle.

We rode dirtbikes in mass. For many years at the otis pipeline and at October mountain. One trail at October mountain is marked keep Out because of bears. We respected that sign and the bears.
Another time while running the pipeline one stood up in the tall grass right near us as we were flying by. It was no time to ask the bear to pose with us for a selfie. We stayed going.

I live in the Pine Barrens. I have seen bears since the seventies.
A friend of ours had a rottweiler that would get out all the time. One day coming back from LBI we thought we saw the dog on RT.72 in front of their house. We slowed down only to have a black bear stareing at us.

Just this year we had one behind our middle school that kept showing up.

4 years ago I moved from a rural area (they exist) of NJ to Georgia. The bear population is growing rapidly. While you can't carry a gun I believe the Canadian Mounties invented pepper spray to deal with grizzlies when their handguns where not effective. I always carried mace.

300lbs isn't a very large bear, even for NJ. It's a tragedy, but one fatality in the history of the state isn't exactly a crisis. When you go out into the woods, you are on the animals turf. Shot happens.

One documented bear death in the history of the state. Any energy spent on bear control would be better used fighting the 2 legged scum. I went to night school in Newark. Lots more dangerous than High Point Park.

When I lived in the Poconos, PA, we always had bears in the yard. You have to be "bear smart" and stay out of their way. They were like enormous raccoons - mostly only interested in your garbage can.
