Fatal Dog Attack, Elmont NY

I always hate to hear about dog attacks especially with children involved. Pit Bulls get a bad rap whenever one does attack and yes they can do some serious damage as well. My ex-wife worked in a city hospital OR for many years and the worst dog attack she ever dealt with was a little girl whose face was tore up badly from a Collie of all dogs. Who would think Lassie could do such a thing?
I've never owned a Pit but have been around a lot of them properly trained and of good blood lines that never showed any sort of aggression.
My niece is a professional dog trainer and I asked her on Sunday what kind of dog should I get next. A Pit Bull was her first suggestion but I told her no as I have plans to do extensive traveling in an RV next summer and sure many parks wouldn't want them.
The RCA dog, Buster Brown dog and Our Gang dog were all pits. Too bad many have been screwed up in recent years.

The RCA Victor dog: "Nipper was born in 1884 in Bristol, England, and died in September 1895. He was a mixed-breed dog and probably part Jack Russell Terrier, although some sources suggest that he was a Smooth Fox Terrier, or part Bull Terrier. He was named Nipper because he would bite the backs of visitors' legs."

That is a terrible tragedy, but it seems to me generalizing about dog breeds in ordinances is not any sort of answer. Any dog can and will bite under certain circumstances and any medium or large size dog can do a lot of harm . . .

Guess you've never heard the one where a year old German Shepherd bit his owner's (13 year old girl) face off. Or the police dog German Shepherd almost killed his handler's baby!!! Nope those never happened. Must have been a pit in a furry suit

DogsBite.org is a national dog bite victims' group dedicated to reducing serious dog attacks and has compiled 10 years worth of dog attacks reported and came up with the following. In the 10-year period from 2005 to 2014, pit bulls killed 203 Americans and accounted for 62% of the total recorded deaths (326). Combined, pit bulls and rottweilers accounted for 74% of these deaths. Data is sobering and needed in any discussion about our beloved pets. Check out the chart and the full report is online.

Let's try this one. It seems the site resized my image down to something I can't read?? Here is the link: Dog Attack Deaths and Maimings, U.S. & Canada, September 1982 to December 31, 2014 - By Merritt Clifton - DogsBite.org

Again. ...which pit bull? The dog I showed is not a pit bull but can be mistaken for one. My 20lbs rat terrier looks like a pit bull too despite not being anything close to one

I am not writing the ordinance, but this type of discussion seems to be between those who are trying to justify or destroy and I have no dog in the hunt either way - so to speak. Without data, however, one cannot make valid points. Posts like the Collie is the only breed "I personally have been afraid of", or German Shepard "bit his daughter's face off" are prime examples where data puts things in proper perspective.

Using DogsBite.org as a reference for dog bite deaths is like using Everytown.org as a reference for firearm deaths.

I learned about confirmation bias and echo chambers in 9th grade Pol. Sci.

We should exercise caution with who we hitch our wagons to.

ETA: Has the horse been beaten to death, yet? :D ;)
