faulty safety

I recently purchased a 9mm M&P 2.0 and a galco IWB holster. Almost every time the weapon is unholstered the safety is off, and it was not put in that way. Is anyone else having these problems.

Does the his happen when you hold the holster in your hand and unholster? I’d say it’s just not a good match for the holster. That’s why a lot of folks don’t like a handgun with a safety, the holster and your bugger picker are the safeties.

The holster is always on my belt, sometimes worn outside my pants, if I'm working around the ranch. I have e-mailed Galco and Smith & Wesson, and the agree it's not their product (of course).

Either the leather is soft enough to manipulate the safety as you move about or as you draw, your swiping it off.

I have both a 1.0 & 2.0 9c with thumb safeties. Having said that, and only being a handgun owner a few years I purposely started that way. What I came to quickly find is my grip with thumb riding the safety feels great for various reasons.

The one thing I quickly realized is without the safety covered in the holster they are prone to change due to everyday situations. Both my safeties have a very positive click, but doesn't prevent them from moving.

I've always carried with the safety off so it wasn't a big deal for me. Add in that I started from the beginning riding the thumb safety it was even less important on my draw.

Assuming your holster is a Galco IWB hybrid, leather or kydex that doesn't cover the safety I venture to say you will continue to have the problem.

There are holster makers that account for the safeties, but for me I'm a simple hobbyist so I made my own kydex holster molded for the safety to be off. It's a pretty nice feature that allows me to re-holster (obviously following all the standard safety protocols) and my holster clicks the safety off right before it seats in the holster.

Most likely, the pistol is shifting in the holster, causing the leather in the area of the Safety to swipe against it. Short of getting a different holster, there is a work-around that could help.

I would recommend marking the area on the holster where the Safety would sit, large enough to cover both the On and Off positions. Then using a mallet & flat punch, work a 'pocket' (not a hole) in the leather around the safety, so that it no longer makes contact.

OP- its possible that the cut of the holster is hitting the safety which, in turn, flips it down as you insert the gun and/or move around. I had this same issue on a Phlster kydex holster for my shield. I simply cut out a notch for the safety area, filed it and then burn the edge so it looks factory. No issues since.

If your safety doesn’t have any tension between on/off then it deserves a trip back to Smith for repair.

I bought an LAG holster for my 2.0 compact, and the way the holster was molded made the safety click off when I holstered it. On one hand, it can be a good thing, but if I want the safety off, I'll click it off. I returned the holster. As far as a safety goes, I'm enjoying having it. None of my other brand pistols have one. It's great for glove box carry, or reholstering in the cold with gloves on and heavy clothing, or in the dark. And yes, I bet my life I'll remember to simply swipe it off if I need it. So tired of hearing everyone scream how awful it is to have a safety on a defensive pistol. They are crowd followers in my opinion. Same goes with the whole .40 sucks thing. I carry .40, and I even use a safety...Go ahead, try to make me a victim of crime if it's so unsuitable...I'm standin' here...

I handled a used Compact 1.0 with a safety recently. The safety moved far too easily for me. I know it’s supposed to be like a 1911 Safety but it isn’t. I don’t know if the 2.0 is any better but I hope so.

I like guns with safeties too. I only own one without a safety, a Kahr K9. At least it has a longer revolver like trigger pull. I used to own a Ruger SR9 and an SR9C. Safety was perfect. Much smaller than the huge one on the M&P. Didn’t stick out so far. Had a nice little shelf to get a good hold onto and a positive click. Swiping safety off was effortless. It took more of an effort to swipe it on which is the way it should be. The safety never became disengaged while bolstered. I have a Ruger LC9-S with the same setup and carry it daily.

If the safety in the M&P wasn’t so obnoxiously big, and if they had a left side only version, I think this issue would be largely nonexistent.

But if you like the gun otherwise, it shouldn’t be an issue. Once the gun is bolstered it can’t be fired.

Now Muss, you know that nothing is ever the person's fault, especially on the internet. It's always a faulty product of some kind since we're all perfect.

I'm guessing that you've confirmed that the fit of the Galco was too loose and that moving around caused the safety to switch.

Thanks for the update. I'd still recommend doing a slight modification to the holster, if you have the tools. No sense in wasting the holster.
