TCM has a wealth of Bogart on demand right now.

I think my favorite Bogart performance is his star turn as Duke Mantee in The Petrified Forest, but that really is a Leslie Howard/Bette Davis movie.

So many great choices - The Maltese Falcon, Casablanca, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. But my favorite is the one that earned him his only Academy Award - The African Queen.

I remember watching it as a kid and being transfixed by it. The movie flies along - something is always happening. Germans, hippos, rapids, leeches....

Oh those leeches gave me nightmares. In my kid memory when Charlie Allnut got out of the swamp he was covered from head to toe in leeches. Of course by now it is only three or four.

So how about it? What is your favorite?

This is tough. I really like this actor and can't just pick one for a favorite. If I was forced to choose one movie of his it would be based on more than just Bogie's performance. I would pick Casa Blanca. I am not saying it is his best. I am just saying that it has a lot going for it that I like. The cast, the writing. The plot and the wwII setting. One of my favorite movies of the time.

There isn't a Bogart film I don't like. I even like "Sabrina", and it's really not my kind of film. Some of the films may not be the best scripts ever, but Bogart always did a great job with whatever he was given.

I guess if I have to pick a top favorite it would be "The Big Sleep", but it's tough to single out just one out of so many great movies.

"African Queen" was my Dad's favorite movie. I must've been about 6 years old the first time I watched it. It was on TV one night and Dad insisted we watch it. He made popcorn and let me stay up late to watch, even though it was a school night. I thought it was great, and those leaches really made an impression.
