Favorite bourbon?

Blanton's.

Did you know that each little stopper has a letter on it and when you collect them all, they spell out Blanton's.

I think I've got BLANTONS, BLANTONS and LTOSS. :D

It's expensive up here so I had to switch to Eagle Rare. Wild Turkey 101 is pretty good too.

Neat, of course - no ice, no water and never any soda.

I was going to correct the assumpton that Jack Daniel was bourbon, but i note several others already have.

A great book that explains the differences, gives a history of distilling, and is just a great coffee table book is called: Whisky, The Water of Life, written by Helen Arthur.

For the history of Jack Daniel, my favorite book is Blood & Whiskey, The Life and Times of Jack Daniel. It was written by Peter Krass.

No, I didn't mispell whiskey or whisky, they are different drinks, from different parts of the world. Read the books!

My favorite bourbon is Makers Mark. My favorite whiskey is Jack Daniel's Black. My favorite single malt scotch whiskey is Glenlivet, favorite blended scotch is J&B.

All served over just a touch of crushed ice, not cubes.

Whisky is as fascinating a topic as guns!

I like wild turkey. I liked it a little to much when I was a young man. I'm just a sipper now. I have a 53 year old bottle of wild turkey special reserve and a bottle of beams best that I think was sold in 1968. I can,t remember when it was bottled. I havn't opened them. I would like to, but that would be like fireing an unfired antique gun.
 
The family recipe for eggnog requires Jim Beam, the only bourbon I drink (and only in the family recipe eggnog!).
 
Speaking as a Kentucky Colonel and having long years of drinking every kind of Bourbon imaginable, I will recommend two as the absolute finest.

1. Rebel Yell. You will have to special order it; almost never found in even the the most extensive liquor stores. Absolutely the smoothest you have ever experienced.

2. I.W. Harper. For years it was not uncommon, but over the last 20 years or so it has been an export item only, almost all of it going to Japan. If you can divert a bottle or two to your own liquor cabinet, consider yourself lucky. My father (born in Kentucky and also a Kentucky Colonel for whom a chapter of that organization is named) bequeathed me a bottle when he died nearly 22 years ago, and I've been reluctant to drain it completely for fear I'll never have any again. It's that good.

For the masses, Jim Beam is available nationwide and isn't all that bad, but it pales compared to the two I have mentioned above. I use it to make tolerable Manhattans when entertaining friends.

FWIW: Jack Daniels is fine, and I like its nut-like overtones, but it's NOT a bourbon. Only whiskeys made in The Commonwealth of Kentucky can be labeled as bourbon.

Being born and raised Kentucky and living here all my life the best bourbon I have ever had is Jim Beam straight out of the barrel, uncut, unfiltered. They will give samples at the distillery while on tour if they are dumping barrels the day you are there. Outside of that:

Wild Turkey 101 is great.
Wild Turkey Rare Breed is great.

Had some Buffalo Trace a while back and it wasn't bad either, since their distillery is about a mile from my office you can smell the mash cooking on certain days when the wind is right.

The best is Woodford Reserve. Just have a little ice and that's all.

Rebel Yell is fairly common in Tennessee sir. My step-father used to drink IW Harper every now and then as I recall, but I'm not sure I've ever had the pleasure.

We used to drink Rebel Yell and IW Harper all the time when we were young-had no idea that it was "top Shelf" stuff-all we knew was that it was cheap. When we stole from the parental units it was either Ancient Age (mom's drink of choice) or Chivas (dad's). Ancient Age on the rocks with a twist of lemon-man that was smoooooooooooooooooth. What turned me to scotch was sometime in my freshman year of college (actually it was at the LSU Tulane game in old Tulane Stadium in '73 when the Greenwave beat LSU for the first time in 25 years), I got stupid on a fifth of K&B Bourbon (those of you who grew up in New Orleans know exactly what I'm takling about :D) and for the longest time-couldn't stand the smell of bourbon.
 
For the "Best Bang for the Buck" I like Bulleit Bourbon Frontier Whiskey.

Plenty of good choices in this thread. My everyday favorite is knob creek. If I want to splurge a little Wild Turkey Rare Breed. The newest one I've tried is wathen's single barrel, pretty good.
