What is a good low or mid rise holster for a 4 inch L or N frame? For whatever reason I do not like a high rise holster. I’d like to get a good quality holster so I was thinking Simply Rugged, Lobo, El Paso Saddlery, Barranti, Milt Sparks, Galco, Just in Case, Diamond D, or Bianchi. Feel free to post pictures.

As always, before suggesting a “big name” entity that normally supplies a gun bucket, I would suggest you contact some of the custom makers on this forum. Excellent quality for less money.

Galco CM156 for 4" N Frame.

Very comfortable to wear including while driving, excellent retention, and it conceals well.

Great leather, perfectly molded and the stitching is excellent.

I carry it often.

The ride might be somewhat higher than you're looking for.

I’ve had good luck with Privateer Leather, Warbird Leather & TTgunleather for revolvers and semiautomatics

Good luck with your search

Milt Sparks PMK is a good one. It keeps the center of mass at or below the midline of your belt.

3" 686+ in a PMK, and a 3" King Cobra in a Kramer crossdraw.

Take a look at Privateer Gun Leather (privateerleather.com). The Corsair is his low ride pancake and the Highwayman is mid-ride. He makes three heights for most models.

I dislike the Milt Sparks PMK since it's too thick and wide. It also has almost no forward cant and the channel is too tight. I hate mine and it just sits in a box.

Maybe start with the Highwayman for and go from there.

OP requested suggestions for a holster to fit the 4" L or N frame. I suggest keeping in mind that these two revolvers are significantly different in size. A holster made for the N frame will usually accept the L frame, but the fit will be quite loose. A holster made for the L frame is unlikely to accept the N frame at all.

A holster fitted specifically for the handgun provides better security (retention) and minimizes movement of the handgun within the holster during use (thus minimizing holster wear to the handgun).

Selection of a particular holster style will depend largely on the intended uses (range, field, hunting, concealment, etc). What works well for one use may not serve well in other uses. The 4 factors to be considered are comfort, accessibility, security, concealment. A holster design that emphasizes one factor will include compromises in the other factors.

Short version: There is no simple solution, there is no single holster design for every user or need, and there is no one size fits all.

I am retired now so all I can offer is the above. You may contact Mark Fedders and family at Lobo Gun Leather for recommendations to meet your needs and preferences, as I'm sure several other good makers will provide.

Best regards.

I got used to a low ride holster when I used to carry a Glock in a cheap holster as a hunting sidearm. Now, anything else feels weird on my hip. It would be a woods carry gun for a 4 inch 629 most likely.

I have also liked Simply Rugged. I have one for several years, and it has carried my Pre 27 3 1/2" and my Mod 24-3 (3"). I wore it several years Prairie dog hunting and it carried the weight of my 24-3 so well I forgot I had it on and walked around in the small town we were staying in in S D. No one even noticed.

Mernickle makes a nice holster if you don't need retention.

A couple of Holsters for 4" N frame

A holster you might consider is the good old Geo. Lawrence #120 "Keith" 532 that sometimes comes up on Ebay. A current Texas maker that I seldom see on this forum is Tucker & Byrd, another reasonably priced possibility.

The TT Gunleather Side Snap Scabbard is a good easy on / easy off low ride. Have them for all sizes.

Here it is...toting a 3" K frame in the Pine Nut Mountains, southeast of Reno.

Here's my version of the odd Tom Threepersons OWB belt holster. I differ in that I prefer an open toe to allow debris, water, snow etc to clear out the bottom. The loop is fitted to the belt...as I normally wear a 1-1/2" belt with Levis etc., that's the size of the loop...this prevents the holster from walking around my waist... The holster itself is fitted to the gun tight enough that no keeper strap is needed.

The speed loader holster is also a home built...fitted so that half the rounds are behind the waist belt...good retention that way and no hindrance to reloading moves.

El Paso makes a similar model, tho with a closed toe, called the Austin. Beautifully crafted, their products are not cheap, but will be a life-time investment...

Best regards, Rod

I'm a Simply Rugged fan. I have two of their pancake holsters. One for my k frame revolvers and one for my j frames. They are a quality product and very comfortable. YMMV though.

Love Galco holsters and love that AKM in the pic
