So maybe this one is for the model 1076 researchers among us ….

I've been trying to find out what serial number prefixes were used in the batches of S&W model 1076s that were shipped to the FBI/FU for issuance to field agents. I thought there was a thread on this board that went into detailed discussion as to the particular letter prefixes S&W used for the FBI 1076s. But if so, I couldn't find it.

Supposedly these special prefixes will distinguish an FBI gun not only from the so-called "civilian" 1076s (notably those retaining the mag disconnect feature, no checkering on the front strap, etc) but also other 1076s that were shipped to state and local LE agencies like, say, the Kentucky State Police. I've seen references to 'TEU,' 'TFE,' 'TFK,' and 'TFS,' and a couple of others.

The 'TFE' is doubtful as exclusively signaling an FBI gun. My own 1076, acquired in 1994, is a 'TFE' with no mag-disconnect and has the warning on the slide. But it has no front strap checkering, just vertical serrations. When I received it, I found there were two 'dots/'dimples' already stamped on the frame under the black tab of the decocking lever.

About 1999-2000 or so, I sent S&W a check for the Jinx Historical Letter. It came back with their standard 10XX-series boilerplate filler, and then said that factory records indicated my 1076 had been sent to a police department in New Hampshire in 1991.

My question is, was there ever a consensus reached as to what letter prefixes were used by S&W on the FBI guns?

Thanks!

All I can say, if you find one get out your checkbook unless you find some old codger that doesn't know what a computer is that owns one.
