Federal aluminum case round for sd40ve?

Brass, Aluminum, Steel

The closest range won't let you shoot anything a magnet will attract but I have no idea about Aluminum. I'll give them a call and see what they say so we can see what the trends are. Actually there are 4 ranges within driving distance, I'll call them all and report (next week). Working on car this weekend.

I do appreciate cheap. . . .

I believe I said I would call some local ranges and see what their limits were (Ignoring the issue of size, shotguns, rifles, and things like that. Just cartridge and bullet makeup).

I called 5 nearby ranges. All 5 allow brass of course, 4 allow aluminum, none allow steel.

Most local range's near me only alow new brass (no reloads). They sell the brass and dont want anything else mixed in, so even though I dont reload I pick up my brass. :)
I did find one that will let you use steel, he said "we just use a magnet to pick out the steel cases".

To live outside the law, You gotta give a damn.

Took the Federal aluminum cases to the range today. sd40ve close to 500 rounds of different brass through it over the past year. No problems before i put these in it. Ouch! Every mag had multiple fte. sometimes every 3 rounds, sometimes every other. 2 different mags. Quit after 32 rounds. Obviously my gun doesn't like these. ran 50 rounds of federal brass and 20 of the corbonDPX after(I got one hell of a deal on the corbons last year) and not a hiccup. Wound up giving the range officer the last 18 rounds. Guess mine is spoiled and only like the good stuff. Glad I always carry a push rod; I needed it today.

I believe that S&W .40 round was developed for law enforcement and is apparently popular in that arena.

However the round has been reported as having a higher than desired percentage of cartridge case failures, due to the relatively larger area of unsupported case rear end.

Were your FTE rounds damaged on the ejection groove or did they stick because they expanded when fired, or both?

My survey of 5 local ranges only found one that prohibited aluminum cases. I didn't think to ask why. All 5 prohibit steel content in any part of the round.

stuck in the chamber. some a little tighter than others. could not pull them out with a fingernail, pushed them out with a rod i carry for that purpose. checked the extractor, no problems there. like I said, I ran brass after with no problems. didn't think to see if groove aligned with extractor tang, that may have been an issue. Still, I'll pay a couple dollars more for wwb or federal brass. I do like the winchester train and defend, too bad my wallet doesn't. Good thing is, no glock bulge on the aluminum cases

I ran 2 boxes of this thru mine couple weeks ago no problems but one FTF. I just came back from range and had 4 in a row FTE stuck in the barrel. Had to knock out with rod. Had to put gun away. Just checked barrel and does not look bad in there? I was hoping for cheap .40 range ammo. Have to stick to brass I guess. No biggie.

I was hoping for good news and lower costs but keep seeing this kind of report.

Now I'm dealing with an SD9 and not a .40, so there maybe less of a problem with the slightly smaller diameter.

I really haven't shopped at Walmart recently and don't know whether they stock 9mm Aluminum.

If any SD9 owner has experience with aluminum cases please report.

Thanks-

I can find Federal Alum 9mm all the time at wally world. My Bersa BP9CC does not like it. My taurus PT111's eat it. Wally world marked down the Perfecta Brass 9mm to 10.97 a box I bought them out 2 times. That stuff shoots great. Made in Italy.
