Greetings everyone...

Just curious, does anyone know why Federal sells certain ammo to LE only? Ammo such as their HST and .38 Plus P 158 LSWHP?

Thanks

It's mostly a Marketing gimic. They can say to the agencies they're trying to sell stuff to "See we save our best stuff for you guys!" I think all of the major ammunition factories do this to some extent or other. There is no actual prohibition against selling it to civilians, but sometimes you have to look around a lot. I am very fond of the HST in all calibers. ammuntiontogo.com often has it. Although like most things these days it may be in short supply.

Thanks for your input. It makes a lot of sense. All marketing!

I have ordered thier HST among others from ammo to go.

Partially marketing and CYA for legislative deflection ("We don't sell really nasty ammo to just anyone!"), but certain loads offered by some companies are +P+ and don't meet SAAMI guidelines as to acceptable operating pressures. Thus an agency buying such ammo might have to sign off and say "Yes, this will beat our guns up, we understand and agree to deal with it". There are also certain companies that sell AP rounds that actually are restricted in terms of who can buy it.

Thanks to both of you for your answers. Makes sense to me!

I remember though years ago when the excellent Fed 38G ( FBI Load ) was available to the general public. At least I can still buy it at Ammo to Go! A few months ago, they offered it @ $17.95 a box ( 50 count ), fantastic buy. Prices now at $29.95. A OK buy considering the market today!

Thanks again!

Best
