has anyone tried the federal TSJ synthetic jacket ammunition in a 1917 says it reduces barrel wear and heat. thinking it might be a good idea, and the price isn't too bad, around 50 cents a round. any thoughts ??
Gee, 1917's were built for hard-ball ammunition, the rifling is quite shallow. The only thing I've learned about them is that unless you shoot an oversized hard alloy lead bullet they do not shoot as well as they do jacketed stuff. I push plated bullets just shy of maximum cast lead and find they work very well. I only shoot a cylinder or so of the hot rod self defense rounds that I carry in an area of questionable safety. They are Federal 230gr. HST +P's, I would not make a habit of firing those things as it will just batter the action, I'll fire a cylinder of them just to stay tuned in to where they regulate on target, a tad high is just fine. The Model of 1955 has deeper rifling and shoots lead much better than the Model of 1950 and the 1917's.
Federal's synthetic jacket is either a powder coating or nylon coating (NyClad) over a plain lead bullet. Just like a plain lead bullet, it will not harm the bore, but like a jacketed bullet, it will prevent lead deposits in the chambers and bore. As for accuracy, it may be good or it may not be good, only one way to find out.
