There is an element of guilt here, but I really can’t help it if I have no interest whatsoever in the newer Smiths.
Except for the 586 and 686 earlier versions with hammer nose. No MIM parts.
Since I don’t carry, and it’s not for self-defense, It’s not At all about the function, weight or convenience.
I just love the old Smith revolvers that I grew up seeing.
Maybe I’ll get One of the classic series some day?
Even then, I like the old hammer nose style.

Why buy the classic series? Just buy a real vintage classic

Here are two similar revolvers.

One pre lock, one post lock.

Not much difference.

SW is offering more no lock models and I anticipate them phasing the lock guns out. I got in a new 629 Mountain gun w/o lock. It was as nice as the original. Maybe nicer with the TGW grips.

They pinch every other penny they possibly can. Now that they're over whatever derangement syndrome has caused them to cling on to the lock for so long, deleting it seems like a natural next step.

And just like that we'll have a whole new area of collecting - IL revolvers!
:)

I'd say it depends upon the intended use and caliber. Let's take the Model 19/66 as a prime example. I have a Model 19-3. I do not use it as a carry gun or home defense gun, it is a well used, beaten by the previous owner, toy. If I were to decide on using a Model 19/66 for carry or home defense, I might want to get a new one as the 19-9/66-8 have a barrel with a full diameter forcing cone/barrel extension and the forward cylinder lock is not on the ejector rod, but between the crane and frame. It's a much better, more robust design for shooting full power 357 Magnum ammo.

I don’t feel guilty and I share the same sentiments. I love the fact that S&W relocated to Tennessee and are making no-lock revolvers again. I wish them all the success in the world but I don’t have any interest in their newer stuff either. My “newest” Smith is 1997 mfg and I inherited it from a fam member.
