The short version:

I have a 1982ish 57-1 Nickel 6" 41 magnum revolver. While it is a great revolver and has a neat history to it, I have lost the romance I once had for it. The revolver has a little more than 500 rounds through it. I shoot it very little. Overall condition is excellent but the turn line is visible. I would have greater utility for something like a light weight varmint rifle. I have found a CZ 527 Royal rifle in .223 Rem. These were actually produced for center-fire rifle silhouettes in the Euro markets back a few years ago. Some came over and are still available. I wanna trade the revolver off for the rifle and a decent scope.

I'm thinking of making this trade offer.

1) Smith & Wesson model 57-1 Target Magnum 6" Nickel
2) 300 fire formed brass from this revolver. (Once fired never got around to reloading it)
3)Approx. 130 rounds of various factory loaded hunting and Defensive ammo.
4)A NIB LEE loader in 41 Rem Mag.
5)A set of older Hornady custom dimension dies. (NiT)
6)A Greatlands suede carrying pouch with the faux (SP?) sheep's wool inside.

Am I nuts?

All responses welcomed. Thank You guys

I'd let the guys on the forum have a chance at it first as you will not likely come out good in a trade with a shop. If your trade is with an individual, then do what you need to do. While neither of those guns are my cup of tea, the Smith will retain its' value better IMO. I've heard nothing but good for the accuracy of the CZ's. Is this rifle what you want or what is available and you want to "trade something"? Give it hard thought, decide on what you want, and gitter done. Best of luck in your choice......

I'm going to guess your package is valued at $800 - $875. What is the cost of the rifle, don't they run around $450 - $500? So it depends on the scope you put with it, at least a Nikon or Leupold to get it up to a comparable trade. CZ has an excellent reputation. I did have a .17 bolt action a couple years ago, and had no fault with it at all. I'd hate go get rid of a 41 mag, so if I did I would sell it here on the forum where I could get the full value out of it. If you're trading with a dealer you will lose at least $150 on the trade.

I can say that the CZ's are some if not the most accurate guns out of the box.

You have to figure the trade based on you gun and not the "accessories" which do not add much to the value of the package.

The CZ 527 comes in several styles and can be had for less than $700 (MSRP)

Guess what I am saying is you can always get a 527 and I really like CZ's.

If the trade comes with a really expensive optics than maybe.

Keep the smith and what kind of varmints you are shooting you would need a .223. I know they make excellent long range varmint rifles but it would depend on what your shooting and how far would be to take into consideration. If its small varmints get a nice bolt action .22 mag and keep the smith.

If you really don't want the 57 anymore, sell all the stuff as a package deal and buy whatever you want.

Somebody else said on this forum one time; "...you can have it all, but if you're broke, you can't have it all at the same time...".

Step away from the cliff!! Try to see if they have "layaway"!! Seriously, the model 57 will always retain or go up in value. Put it aside, buy the new rifle and have fun. The 57 ain't like a wife, it will sit in the safe waiting for you to remember it patiently!!

Model 57s don't grow on trees anymore, an .41 Magnums aren't flying off dealers shelves either.
I'd keep it for awhile longer, maybe try a little long distance handgunning. Dale

Thank You guys,... I've decided to keep it.....

Made a blitz run up to Springfield MO, Bass Pro and looked at the CZ 527 Varmint. Similar to what I'd be trading for. After picking it up and thinking about the model I want. Not going to do it. Even if this rifle is really rare.

Thanks guys for your comments..

I think you made a wise decision. I have a CZ rifle and they are very nice rifles, but, the Mod. 57 is going to retain it's value in the long run. Besides...It's a Smith & Wesson.:D
