Fereral Hi-Shok

I am looking for general input on Federal Hi-Shok and/or specifically 9mm 147JHP. I ordered 150 rounds to see how my 3906 and SD9 would like it. If it feeds and performs well I intend on using this as my SD/HD ammo. A search of the internet only gets me reviews of Hydra Shok or the 115 JHP Hi Shok

The Federal Hi-shok is outdated ammo. I wouldn't carry it for SD, unless I were carrying it in .45. I still think it's a respectable round in 230 grain .45 cal, for the price, but there is better out there.

Basically, however, the 9mm 9BPLE+P+ round at 115gr. is still a great performer, so long as you are going with the +P+ version, and your gun can handle that loading.

But at 147? I would target practice with it, and nothing else. That 147gr. Hi-Shok is from an era when the 147's didn't perform well due to their inability to open-up.

Don't feel bad, tho... you probably got it at a good price, and there's nothing wrong with shootin' it up and breaking-in a gun with it.

If you really want a nice round for 9mm carry that's a 147, go with the 147 grain HST. They are often available at places like mahsupplies.net , for example.

Good catch on my fereral ammo. Fingers and eyes not working very well this AM. I was not fully convinced on the ammo, being as it is no being manfactured, but I figured at the price I would try it.

Find out what weights shoot best in your gun.

I carry the 147gr. HST's, and they do very well in standard pressure.

I would recommend any of the following, in no particular order:

1. Speer Gold Dot in anything 124 or higher
2. Remington Golden Saber BONDED 124gr.+P
3. HST in anything 124 or higher

My son has put a lot of their 135gr ammo through a few different 9mm pistols and he just lovers the stuff. I'm sure the 147gr ammo is comparable.

There is a ballistics video on youtube that tested the Hi-shok. It failed to expand. Not something I want to defend my home, no matter how good the price is.

I use SG Ammo as well, they have great prices. I also keep plenty of Golden Saber, Gold Dot, and HST around.

I used & periodically tested the 115gr Class 9BP/C9BP for decades and keep at least one box on hand for a couple of pistols. I've never found it to fail to expand to 64 caliber in tissue simulant. BTW, the 147 gr Hydra-Shok in the same simulant expanded and penetrated per their advertised performance.

On the other hand, the same bullet driven in the 9BPLE generally fragments, limiting penetration. Honolulu PD was generally unhappy with the results of this ammo on extra large economy size South Pacific islanders.

There are newer, possibly sexier designs, it doesn't mean the (better) older stuff doesn't work well.

The 9BP was carried by the Philadelphia PD for years. It has been re-badged as the new "Self Defense" ammo and sold in 25 rounds boxes at an exorbitant price. You can find 50 rd. boxes online for the same price as WW white box.

The 9BP load, has an EXCELLENT track record; as long as my arm.

As does the 9BPLE (1300 fps).

I noticed the tester used four layers of denim, that's a lot. A bunch of HP's would clog with that test medium.

I carry both of the above loads, with confidence.
