FFL fees? how much?

I talked to my FFL today to see what he charges to ship a handgun. He said that he charges $30.00, and I was just wondering if that is a good price. I ain't never shipped one before. Sold a Beretta pistol and gonna ship it if I don't drive there anyway. Just wondered what the average fee is. He said that it was $100 bucks in California. Do they just come up with a fee, or does it vary from dealer to dealer or state to state or what.

My guy charges $30 to receive and transfer a gun to me which I think is entirely reasonable. If you want to use him to ship a gun, he will charge you the $30 fee to run it through his books plus whatever the Post Office charges him-again entirely reasonable. BUT he says I ought ot just ship it myself as it would cost about the same (basically he doesn't want to fool with shipping-and I really can't blame him).

that is a very 'fair" price, we too see and hear of some charging well up there, and a guy recently transfered his deceased fathers "handguns" to New York and was charged $75 each!! after all the other paper work and permits required by new York....wow.....a nighmare......

Seems like the "norm" for California is about what your FFL there surmised, about $100 most places. There are some less expensive if you hunt around, best price I've managed has been $65. I guess It takes a couple man-hours to fax off a copy of the FFL and review a 4473.

I'm not sure I just asked him what he charged to ship a handgun and he said " $30.00. I would say that since different handguns weigh different weights, that that probably wouldn't include the actual shipping fees. I'll ask him tomorrow and find out.

$15 fee + whatever the USPS Priority Mail flat rate is for shipping and $15 when I am a buyer. He does a lot of business.

I'll bet you can NOT ship it cheaper and meet the requirements. It only took me ONE time (the first and only time) to see that it was not cost effective at all. I lost my rear on the shipping. Fortunately, my FFL only charges me his cost but I always throw a $5 or $10 at him above the cost. They have the advantage of being able to use the USPS -which is the most cost effective way to ship a handgun- whereas you can't.

My fav ffl (well only ffl) charges ten bucks for a transfer. I try to give him as such biz as possible and I try to send as many people his way as possible. He told me he'd ship for me for just the price of shipping. I haven't had to ship yet, only buy.

$30 is a fair price for shipping a handgun. Insurance through the USPO isn't very cheap and add a signiture delivery to that and you're right about there in most instances.
The FFLdealer can use USPO,,a non-FFL can't (for handguns).
It would cost at least double and probably more than that to send it by UPS or FedEx overnite.

A plus is that it'll be arriving from an FFL at the other end and the issue of some FFL's not wanting to receive a firearm from a non-FFL won't be an issue. I know it's not a necessity(except in at least one instance I'm aware of),,but alot of dealers demand it and it has messed up or delayed more than a few transactions.

Transfers only seem to be around 30 to $50 around here. Alot depends on wether the dealer really wants to bother w/ them. Higher if he doesn't.

My present dealer charges a $25 FFL fee, whether receiving or shipping a gun. If shipping a gun, he gives the preferred customer rate, which is normally around $48 no matter where I have shipped. I provide the box and packing, he fills out the UPS paperwork (2nd day air, adult signature, etc.) and has them pick it up.
I've shipped once on my own through FedEx, and it was $58. For the $15 difference, I'd rather ship through my dealer and not have to worry.
I think the $25 fee is reasonable; my last dealer charged a $40 fee to receive a firearm at his store, even when I ordered it on his phone. I won't be using him again.

My LGS charges $20 for the FFL fee. I just bring him a addressed paid for USPS flat Rate shipping box with his shops name on. Do this online at USPS Click and Ship. Leave the box un- sealed so he can record the serial number, log it, tape it mail person picks it up next day.

I'm working on buying an AR-15 lower. Guy doing the transfer charges 20 bucks. I can cut a deal with seller, he sends a copy of his ffl and I see the guy pay him. Obviously he runs me though NICS.

Alternatively, he is trying to see if he can set up an account with seller and see if he can get dealer pricing and offer me his price with his markup that I will accept.

This is a bit more work than just sending a gun somewhere.

20 to 30 for doing the paperwork sounds reasonable. Shipping should be extra but since the typical FFL is a business they get better UPS rates.

There are two FFLs close to me. One charges $25, the other $30, for a transfer. Shipping is extra, but they charge me their actual cost, which is a help. The guy who charges $25 won't accept a transfer from a private individual; the guy who charges $30, will. I just picked up two S&Ws from this guy today, and he charged me $40 to transfer both guns, $20 each, which I view as very fair.

Here in NW FL its $47 for a transfer. Never shipped one using a dealer. Mostly, I buy older guns and use my C&R.

In Central Oregon, the fee is usually $20-$25.
