Hello, is it easy to get an FFL license? I don't own a store, but am wondering if I could get one, and this way be able to buy guns/ammo direct.

Has anyone done this?

It isn't easy. I thought about getting one,but when you do you open yourself up to the BATF. They can come into your home and question you at anytime. I didn't find it worth it just to buy guns and ammo. If you are wanting to make a business out of it that's a different story.

I know some others will chime in with real experience. i did find a lot of info here.

I do believe the first thing you're going to need is a RETAIL ZONED building, they kinda ran the home FFL'S out of business years ago.

You need Vendors License and pay sales taxes.

The Feds come to visit for paperwork checks.

BUSINESS is BUSINESS and it's work, not just some fun hobby.

Thank you everyone. I guess its not a good idea for your average home owner. LOL!

I found some posts from around the web in which some folks describe working out of their home. I dont remember the dates of those posts bu ti am sure google can find them for you.

My area of interest is vintage weapons. I applied for and received a Type 3 FFL as a licensed Curio & Relic firearms collector.

The license is not difficult to obtain and costs $30 for three years. Many of the large supply houses like Midway USA and Brownells offer discounts on their merchandise to Type 3 holders, including ammo. I have saved enough on purchases from these two alone to pay for the cost of the license. I’ve saved even more when I consider the number of times I would have had to pay an FFL to simply transfer a C&R firearm.

Had a C&R license and dropped it after 6 yrs. Had to log in guns and log them out if sold. Passed up some deals buying and selling. No one wanted to show their drivers license to a stranger to copy down their address. With an FFL, every gun is logged in and out. Larry

Aside from the FFL, you will also need state and/or local business licenses, sales tax certificate and in some places special permits to deal in firearms and ammo.
It is a business and has to be properly documented as such.

An 01 FFL is for a business. If you have no real intention of running one and want it just for the discount,,forget it.

Yes you can run an FFL business from your home and receiver an FFL with that as the business licensed premises.
However, the local zoning laws must allow it and you have to be in compliance with that. It will be checked.
As stated also, any State license(s) required for both the firearms side of the business and a business in general will be required.
Sales tax is another thing that has to be considered. A license as a vendor and yearly or quarterly payments as/if required.

Keep the books and paperwork as required by BATFE & State and you'll be fine. Try to play the fringe and you'll have long sleepless nights, big lawyer bills and eventually no FFL license.

It's a heavily regulated business, know that going in.

It's really not difficult to get an FFL, just time consuming.
Rather than rehash what has already been covered as far as zoning, State licensing, and taxing, I'll just burst your bubble another way:
Most wholesalers/distributors dealers will not sell to you without a commercial storefront.
RSR, Davidson's, Zanders, Sport South, Lipsy's, Jerry's, et al all require proof that you're running a storefront.
