I have 1 local guy that does my transfers and lately every one has been delayed, (and I'm not the only one getting delayed) when I have traded some at other shops they get approved in minutes. Just wondering if anyone else has run into this ?

What state? Are they going to the FBI system or is it a state run check? Perhaps your state has enacted something or your local FFL is on somebody's watch list.

It's in IND and he does it online as do the other places I've traded with. I wanted to buy several guns in the classified but I'm a little leery of the wait.

Both of these:

Then I suspect there is now a felon in the system with the same name as you or one very similar.

Hate to say it boys but that is why I let them call in my SSN it solves a lot of these type of problems. As far as the "but then they will know my SSN" crowd, I've got some news for you-they already know everything about you they need to know

My name is very common, I never thought it was, until I googled it. There was a guy serving a long time for murder in IL with my same name, and about the same age if I remember right. The weird thing tho is this is the only place I have a problem. thought about putting my SS# on the app but can't get myself to do it.

It doesn't take much at all to trip a Delay in the system for you.
Someone long ago that violated a simple Order of Protection and never answered for that can do it.
The name doesn't even have to be the same.
Completely different name but the same DOB will hit in NCIC on a want/warrent,,so I imagine it does in NICS too.

Depending on how they set the parameters in the search of the name, DOB, and other numbers relating to the person,,,a name close to the spelling of the Search entered can hit,,a switched first and middle name combination, switched dob numbers (all things people trying to disappear but still easily remember their new identity do).
If NICS is like NCIC,,the system only searches the first 3 letters of the first name, the middle initial, and the first 5 of the last name.
So lots of combinations can come up.
Alias names come in to play also and there's a whole new field of possibilitys of your name being linked in whole or part with an undesirable.

The one shop with all the Delays and the others with out them.
The only thing I can think of off hand would be that first shop may have had some issues with BATF/FBI in the past. Or some of the wrong people are trying to use the shop as an xfer point by using false info

FBI may be putting extra scrutiny on transfers/names going thru that shop.
When you do a NICS check, the FFL uses a password to get in, so the FBI knows the exact FFL/Shop the xfer is being done by.
Not passing any judgement on the shop,
Yea, I know,,all the NICS info is trashed after the call.,,Sure

Just from experience..

I believe there's a felon in the system with my name, as well. The very first gun I purchased, I had to provide my SSN.

If problems persist and don't like listing SSN, maybe go the UPIN (box 9 on 4473) route???

The Feds will not issue a UPIN just because you don't want to use your SSN or because you get a "delay" on your transfers. I've known several friends who always get delayed and they tried that route only to be denied the option of getting a UPIN.
I've done thousands of NICS checks and have only seen one UPIN. I asked about it and got an interesting answer. His twin brother was arrested on a felony charge and used his brother's name when arrested. It took about a year to get it straightened out and resulted in him being issued a UPIN.

Got to agree with cajunlawyer . If you think they don't know everything about you , I've got some swampland down here for sale . I always put my ss# on the form , it states it makes it faster . I've been to gun shows and it comes back in minutes . Gone to my FFL one day and it's minutes , the next week it took 45 minutes . You've got to remember , it is the government at work .

I picked up a hammered double today. I wasn't even done perusing the ammo selection when the check went through.

I have a co-worker who has a double...……….same first name, same middle initial, same last name, and same date of birth. Middle name is different, as well as place of birth. You never know what is lurking out there!
