For the record, I bought this pistol from a local chain sporting goods store which does not accept firearm returns. As I learned, the new 617-6 was defective in the box. S&W provided the prepaid label which I used to ship them the revolver, under warranty. S&W has shipped repairs directly back to my home, in the past, and offered to do so this time, but FedEx requires my picture ID and signature at the time of return, which is rarely within their estimated time window. I've missed appointments and had to cancel plans waiting for morning deliveries that arrive at 5:30pm, etc.. FedEx will not release a firearm to my wife or other person I've designated. That is why I'm disappointed to know that the inconvenience caused by asking my FFL to receive the shipment will cost me the same bucks as transferring a new purchase.
