Do any of you ever attempt to bed the FO rod in the sight base with some type of clear glue? I understand how melting the ends is intended to hold the rod in place, but it still seems fragile to me. One company encloses their FO rod in a clear plastic housing to protect it from bumps, etc. I'm not suggesting going that far, but just laying some clear glue between the bottom of the rod and the top of the sight base to firm up the mount. Any thoughts?
Thanks

They're tougher than you might think.

If the holes the fiber optic goes through are smooth, closely fitting, and are beveled on the outside edges the plastic is pretty break-resistant. I normally wick thin super glue in as well. With the front sights I use the middle part of the fiber optic is completely unsupported. A few years ago I was at a match that did not allow fiber optic sights, and I was unable to break mine out with my fingers. If you're worried about the strength of yours sacrifice one to test destructively, and see if it's an issue.

I've used fiber optic front sights in IPSC competition and on the PMR 30 I carry on the ranch. I've the PMR sight break once and replaced the IPSC sight about once a year. The problem I see with glue is the difficulty of removing/replacing the sight if it does break. The PMR sight broke because I carry the pistol in a Yaqui Slide holster that does not cover the front sight and it gets banged around some in and out of pickups and tractors. The IPSC sight also saw some hard use - shooting through barricades, etc.

Most come out because of improper installation. However, extended exposure to chemicals damage the rod and can make it brittle.
