Is anyone use a fiber optic service? I'm thinking of switching but only if there is an advantage. I'm currently using my provider for high speed internet and phone.

The fiber optic company touts 1000Mbs and almost instant downloads. No so sure about believing the hype, although it would be handy for downloading movies!:D ( Price is about the same as my current provider)

I welcome your input.

Thanks

In my area Verizon (which I had for 5 years) uses Fiber Optics. That said, it's really not true 100% fiber optics because that only goes into their ONT box mounted on the outside of the house and then Copper Coaxial Cable runs from the ONT box into and throughout your home to the individual sets.

The quality was very good with Verizon however I cold not deal with the liars, lousy customer service and deceitful salespeople any longer so I switched to Optimum Altice. The Opt. Altice does not tout or use nearly as much Fiber Optic Cable as Verizon does, however their picture quality, features, pricing and customer service blows Verizon's out of the water!

I've been with Opt/Altice for just under a year now and am quite happy with their service. You can call them at 3 am and they will get on the phone and gladly help you through any issue you might have. Don't try that with Verizon - you'll be on hold all night!

With Verizon I had a download speed of 50. With Altice I have 400. My Netflix, Amazon, Youtube and Hulu work much much better with Opt/Altice and I never have freezing issues while streaming any longer. I don't know what choices you have in your area but personally I would not go back to Verizon if they were the only game in town! I'd also stay far away from any service such as Dish Network - very very weather sensitive!

I hope that does not confuse you even more - but the bottom line here is Fiber Optics is more of a sales gimmick than reality in my opinion. Like I stated above, Opt./Altice picture quality is even better than the Fiber Optics of Verizon.

We have Comcast internet. Paid for 100mps for several years. Then read an article online which said that 25-50 was enough to stream movies. Dropped our internet to 50 and have no problems downloading movies and using two tablets at the same time.

But if 1000mps doesn’t cost much more, go for it.

i get fiber optic thru my phone co=op.
i love it. movies never freeze. i get all the speed i need.

Yeah, fiber mostly isn't.....

I'm on the ATT fiber plan, but the line that extends into our subdivision is plain old wire. The signals can blaze around the portions of the system actually served by fiber optics but when it hits the old stuff, It's back to 12 gbs download and 2.5 gbs upload. Which, by the way, is much faster than the 24 baud modem I used to have.

Just a guess but the individual benefits of the FO fat pipe might be limited by the distribution ability of the router, and you'd only approach the maximum download threshold if users on multiple router channels are streaming HD video.

I switched from non fiber Spectrum to Century Link fiber, other than a less expensive bill the answer is no. ymmv

Have fios for 11yrs never had any issues. Blazing fast internet 24/7 perfect picture and voice.

We have coax at the house which is fed at the local provider switch by fiber. Service sped up when the main coax feed was replaced by fiber, but I've always been pretty happy with the download speeds. We've got six HDTV's, two gaming systems, four smart phones, three computers, four tablets, and who knows what else running off our feed, and I'm never seen a problem with the service that wasn't created on our end. Nobody here is yet offering fiber optic straight to the house, and I imagine you'd have to get the house recabled before you'd see the benefits described.

The fiber optic feed runs down the median of the interstate, and occasionally gets whacked by MODOT.
