Finally found my grail gun!

CH4, I think the jig is up. Your secret is out. I've notice a few custom gun builders offering 358 win in AR platforms. Does it kick much more than a 308? If memory serves me right that's the cartridge it's based on

To this day I regret not buying a 358 Savage 99 I saw at a shop I used to pass on my way to my house from work. Went back to buy it a while later and it was gone. Have a couple of other 99s and a Win 70 FW, but no 358s. I do have a 358 barrel for my Savage 110, so all is not lost - if I ever get around to mounting it.

I love classics. My pre-64 M 70 is a 1954 model in 300 H&H. I have several other M 70's, but that 300 H&H is my favorite. There is something very satisfying about keeping one of these classic firearms in an oddball caliber running. It's surprisingly easy to do since virtually every cartridge out there is based on either 375 H&H, 30-06 or 8 mm Mauser.

I also have an early 50s Win M70 FW, but in .308. Problem with it is a previous owner put a non-factory rubber butt pad on it. Try as I might, I never could find a load that it shot much better than 2 MOA. But actually that is plenty good enough grouping for hunting purposes. Also have a 1939 standard M70 in .270 that shoots like a bench rest rifle with about any load. Except a previous owner drilled and tapped the rear receiver bridge. Oh well, it is still a M70 otherwise. Never owned nor fired any rifle in .358.

Got her home. She's a solid 97%. Seller, an avid Winchester collector, said its been shot but not hunted or scope mounted. The few dings are from handling it when taking it to and from shows where he'd display it with other Winchester collectors. Treated the stock and metal with a little Ren Wax. Unlikely I'll taker hunting, but she'll get shot.

Very nice find, and a great cartridge. My 358 is a BLR - great elk round. And nice find with the Savage; now you've got me thinking ;-).

Thanks!
A couple years ago, I had a nice BLR 358 take down, possible stainless, slip through my fingers. Pawn Shop wanted $800. I hesitated. It was gone the by noon the next day. :(

I had Pacnor build me a 358 on a M70 classic SA. It's killed just about everything from coyotes to deer.

Yep, 358 Win and only 358 win. My pet round. :)
I have always believed the 358 Win. was one of the most overlooked cartridges by hunters ... it has so much potential .

I would love to have a nice single shot chambered in 358 Win.
I cast bullets and handload ... so it would be a lotta Fun !

Congratulations on the Sweet Score ... you hit it out the park !

Very nice find. Of all the pre-64 model 70's, I like the featherweights the best. Mine is a 30-06. Scope it and shoot it!!!!

My buddy has a stainless/synthetic Win M70 that started out as a .243. He had it rebarreled to .358 and it is a great gun. He has a Leupold 2.5-8x36 on it and it makes a great woods gun.

I have threatened to take it from him several times while at deer camp.

That's exactly what I did. Found a nice Classic 243 Featherweight and sent her off the Pacnor. When she returned a 35&, I finished her with a McMillan stock and 2.5-& Leupold, which I recently swapped out for a 1-4 with Pig Plex reticle.

Update:

Grail gun going back. :( Knew it was too good to be true. When I removed the stock, I found the manufacture date and part of the roll marks below the wood had been polished off. :(
