I know, I know, pictures or it didn't happen. But I can't pick it up until my Maryland 7-day waiting period is up. Anyway, 1956 4-screw K-22, good finish except a little muzzle wear, diamond magnas. $700, but the FFL gave me more for another gun as a partial trade than I expected to get. And I won enough at poker last night to cover the difference. Yesterday was a good day.

My first 3 S&Ws, all in the last three months - the K-22, before that an SW1911 E-Series, and a 19-4 before that. Next up - Model 27 or 28. It's a sickness, I can see that.

Oh great, another person that has discovered how great the old S&Ws are... :) Seriously, congratulations on your K-22. Please post pics once you get it.

Pics will definitely be forthcoming. The K-22 along with the 19-4; I got the .22 just to keep the .357 company.;) I honestly don't know why it took me so long to get interested in the old Smiths. A Model 15 is probably in my future, too.

And so it goes.... another member goes over the edge into old revolver abyss.

WELCOME, you'll have lotsa' company!:D

If you're gonna be buying up old Smiths, you need to get out of the People's Republik of Maryland and move to Virginia where CCW holders can buy multiple handguns and take them home immediately. Come to think of it, maybe you'd better wait until I buy a few more before you start that.

Hello ma deuce
Congratulations on locating a Four Screw variation K-22. I feel the Four screw variations are soon to be Very collectible, & Highly sought after, they have been Ignored Far too Long.My reason for feeling they will grow in demand is their Short window of production span compared to the pervious K-22 Variations made. The Four screw variations came to be around Early 1956 and ended around 1961- Era giving them a six year span roughly before they dropped the Trigger guard screw making all later made K-22's the Three Screw Variation. That said the Cream of the crop for the Four Screw variation is the "Non-Model stamped K-22's". These were made from Early 1956 time span until mid 1957 time span. After 1957 the K-22's were all model stamped as the MOD. 17 and later came the dash series variations. Shown below is my June 1956 K-22 Non Model stamped Four screw revolver. This gun shipped to Shapleigh Hardware company of St. Louis MO. in June of 1956 and was Logged into their gun Inventory in July of 1956 as the bottom of the box shows it to be. The Shapleigh hardware company used to be a huge S&W stocking dealer and sold S&W Gun's Wholesale. On a special Note, This Example has the Older style Upswept hammer design, also called the Fish Hook style hammer that was common on early Postwar K-22's but kind of Odd to see on one this Late as Target Hammer's and Target Trigger's came into Play around January 1950 for the K-Frame Target Hammers and January 1956 for the Target style triggers. S&W was Not a company to waste part's so if they could use up existing supplies on hand before switching over to the newer designed part's they often did so, certainly explaining why my gun has the Older style Up-swept hammer in it. This one came to me in it's original serial numbered Box with it's tools and Paperwork including the original warranty card, canceled check for payment as well as it's original serial Numbered Magna stocks. Please show us a picture of your Four Screw K-22 when it clears it's waiting period, we all Love to see K-22's here, and just out of Curiosity here, is yours by chance a Non-Model stamped Four Screw variation K-22 Like mine is ? ...Regards, Hammerdown

Congrats, am going to go and look at a 17-4 this weekend. It could well be my first S&W and 1st Revolver as well... So wish me luck!

OK, rub it in. I was down at the Chantilly show a couple of weeks ago, and don't think I wasn't thinking about it. Unfortunately, my practice keeps me tied to Maryland. I was born in Winchester, and most of my relatives are in that area. When I cross the river, it feels like I'm going across Checkpoint Charlie from East Berlin to West.

If that "practice" is a legal practice, come on down anyway. We'll have plenty of work for you here in VA with the leakage over our borders with MD, DC and to a lesser degree WV. If it's a medical practice, you know you are welcome anywhere!

Good old Winchester is still as pretty as ever. I should be there Sunday afternoon (@ Ft Shenandoah.) Maybe I'll see you @ a Chantilly show sometime.

Froggie

Thanks for the great post, Hammerdown. You answered two questions I hadn't even asked yet - when did the transition come from 4 screws to 3, and when did S&W start the Model 17 designation. The problem with all this is, the more information I get, the longer my wish list grows. Now I've at least got to get a 5-screw and a 3 screw.

And yes, my gun is one of the 4-screw pre-17s.

I used to collect Lugers, but the prices have become so insane that I haven't been buying any more. I guess I'll substitute a Smith & Wesson habit.

I'll keep you in mind for the next Chantilly show. That was the first one I've gone to, and it was way, way better than the Maryland shows, which are mostly a waste of time. Silverado (Frederick, Howard County) isn't too bad, but the Appalachian Promotions shows (Timonium and elsewhere) are just pathetic. The only reason I go to Timonium is that it's 5 minutes from my house, but I feel like I'm getting ripped off even then.

Winchester has always reminded me a lot of Frederick, where I grew up and my mother still lives, although Winchester hasn't grown as much as Frederick has. What part of Virginia are you in? I've been thinking of going down to that new range megaplex in WV, down below Sheppardstown.

Congrats on the purchase of the world's finest .22 revolver. One of mine is a 4 screw non model marked, pictured here. It is the one that started my K frame addiction. Never met a K22 I didn't like.

Congratulations, the K22 is a great revolver and one of the nicest .22's ever.

Don't feel too bad about the seven day wait, here in Kalifornistan we have a 10 day wait. Here's the kicker: I have my CCW and walked into and out of the shop armed.

My 4 screw K22 target is marked as MOD 17.K361XXX. My K22 CM is not model marked, sn.K315XXX. I started my S&W collection with a 4 screw K38 and have been seeking them out ever since. Like Hammerdown, I believe 4 screws will be the more valuable guns from that time period being that they only made for a short time. A pic of my 4 screw K22 CM.

Am I right in my impression that the K-22 CMs are a lot more rare than the 6" guns? Down at Chantilly a couple weeks ago I saw 4 or 5 6" guns plus some M17s, but only one 4", and that was a late M18. Do the 4"-ers bring higher prices?

Yes, they do bring higher prices than the 6" ones. They are much more rare.
