Finally Getting a K-22

Congratulations, on your purchase. I too believe that the K-22 is the world's finest .22 revolver. I have a 17-4 and love it. It was my first S&W purchase, and it brought on The Illness. There might never be a cure.

Congratulations, the K22 is a great revolver and one of the nicest .22's ever.

Don't feel too bad about the seven day wait, here in Kalifornistan we have a 10 day wait. Here's the kicker: I have my CCW and walked into and out of the shop armed.

I feel for you folks in CA, with the seemingly arbitrary rules on what guns are legal to buy and which ones aren't. Here in MD, we have an official list of approved guns, ostensibly intended to keep "Saturday Night Specials" out, but virtually every gun submitted for approval gets on it eventually, even High Points, as long as it doesn't come with more than a 20-rd. mag.

On the other hand, you were able to get a carry permit. Here in MD, self-defense isn't a "good and substantial" enough reason - you've generally got to show that you frequently carry large amounts of cash. Although a federal district judge recently struck this requirement down, the ruling is stayed pending appeal.

Hello ma deuce
Congratulations on locating a Four Screw variation K-22. I feel the Four screw variations are soon to be Very collectible, & Highly sought after, they have been Ignored Far too Long.My reason for feeling they will grow in demand is their Short window of production span compared to the pervious K-22 Variations made. The Four screw variations came to be around Early 1956 and ended around 1961- Era giving them a six year span roughly before they dropped the Trigger guard screw making all later made K-22's the Three Screw Variation. That said the Cream of the crop for the Four Screw variation is the "Non-Model stamped K-22's". These were made from Early 1956 time span until mid 1957 time span. After 1957 the K-22's were all model stamped as the MOD. 17 and later came the dash series variations. Shown below is my June 1956 K-22 Non Model stamped Four screw revolver. This gun shipped to Shapleigh Hardware company of St. Louis MO. in June of 1956 and was Logged into their gun Inventory in July of 1956 as the bottom of the box shows it to be. The Shapleigh hardware company used to be a huge S&W stocking dealer and sold S&W Gun's Wholesale. On a special Note, This Example has the Older style Upswept hammer design, also called the Fish Hook style hammer that was common on early Postwar K-22's but kind of Odd to see on one this Late as Target Hammer's and Target Trigger's came into Play around January 1950 for the K-Frame Target Hammers and January 1956 for the Target style triggers. S&W was Not a company to waste part's so if they could use up existing supplies on hand before switching over to the newer designed part's they often did so, certainly explaining why my gun has the Older style Up-swept hammer in it. This one came to me in it's original serial numbered Box with it's tools and Paperwork including the original warranty card, canceled check for payment as well as it's original serial Numbered Magna stocks. Please show us a picture of your Four Screw K-22 when it clears it's waiting period, we all Love to see K-22's here, and just out of Curiosity here, is yours by chance a Non-Model stamped Four Screw variation K-22 Like mine is ? ...Regards, Hammerdown

That is one gorgeous package! I agree the Cream of the Crop for the Four Screw variation is the "Non-Model stamped K-22's".

The 2nd is the 4 screw M17-1 that has the left hand threaded extractor rod starting in 1959 and ending with the 17-2 with deleted 4th screw in 1961 if one is looking for a complete set.

I'm still looking for my K22. The six inchers are really nice, but I want a four inch to mate with my K38 combat masterpiece. My LGS has a six inch from 1955 now, with only a little muzzle wear and target grips, but I'm holding out for the four.

I dropped back in on this thread & seen Drew, Kurt, Bigmoose and Combat posted pics....

OK, rub it in. I was down at the Chantilly show a couple of weeks ago, and don't think I wasn't thinking about it. Unfortunately, my practice keeps me tied to Maryland. I was born in Winchester, and most of my relatives are in that area. When I cross the river, it feels like I'm going across Checkpoint Charlie from East Berlin to West.

My folks live outside of Winchester and I came real to moving there when I retired.

If you like guns from the War Between the States, you need to go to Fort Shenandoah, especially during the Spring or Fall National shoots. It is located off Rt 522, NW of town. The N-SSA shoots everything from revolvers through muskets up to cannon and morters.

I'm picking up my 17-4 later this week when paper work is cleared... I think I have the fever already as it'll be my first...:D

Finally freed my 4-screw from Maryland handgun purgatory, and thought I'd post the pictures I promises. Between me and my camera, not very good, but you'll get the idea. The gun is even prettier than I originally thought, and shoots great. Now I want a 5-screw. Or a Model 15, whichever I find first. Or maybe a 27 . . . .

These can be habit forming. I picked up a K22 masterpiece 6" barreled 22cal, a colt police positive 6" barreled 22cal, a colt officers target match 6" barrel 22cal, a taurus m94 6" barreled 22cal and 4 more H&R 22cal revolvers. Along with all these i een into the late 1890's to early 1900's 22 ca rifles too, like rollin blocks, fallin blocks and pumps. These are more fun and a hoot to shoot too.

That is a real pretty revolver. Once you start collecting 6" blue wheel guns, your life is pretty much over as you once knew it. Now you will start dropping in at the various gun shops and pawn stores in your area on a more regular basis. Then you'll be searching online for a list of all the gun shows within 300 miles of your home. Next it will be searching online sites like Gun Broker until the wee hours of the morning looking for deals. Oh the horror of it. Another young life falling into the S&W abyss.

Then add to that Rugers, Colts, Winchesters, etc., and it becomes darn near life threatening!!

Not me. I'm not addicted. I can quit any time I want. In fact I must have quit at least 5 times this year alone!!

Nice find, ma deuce. Maybe we can meet up at a future Chantilly or MACA show and join the hunt together. In the meanwhile, good hunting.

Regards,
the Frog

You're pretty much describing my life as it already is. One thing, though - I'm thinking of stepping outside the box and making my next buy a Combat Masterpiece or M15, if I can find a nice one. Or maybe a nice 4" M28 - saw a few of those down at the last Chantilly show.

I started collecting the S&W N Frame magnum revolvers but the 22cal revolvers keep on showing up lately. I just wanted a few to play with..is it habit forming you bet, can i stop at anytime nope....These are rare anyway. I don't see that many older colots, S&W's and ruger revolvers here, its not that often were they show up.
