it took quite a bit of searching but I finally got it. Ended up having to go thru a different dealer but got a better price so it was worth it. The dealer I bought from got 2 no lock 642s and 2 no lock 442s on Monday. Already sold one of each. I found it on gunbroker but shop was local to me so I was able to just pick up in store. I found a set of CT grips on gunbroker last week and should receive those soon. Can't wait to try it out at the range next week.

Did you have any trouble deciding between the 442 or 642? I am kind if thinking about this myself. Thanks, Brian

No, I prefer the black color anyway. I haven't seen a lock model in person, just pictures, but the no lock looks so much nicer. Hopefully the info I got that S&W was going to continue to make the no lock models is correct. They are tough to find.

I work at a gun shop and we are starting to see the no locks come in. We got 4 642's in Monday with no locks or as we call them The Hilliary Hole. I have a 442 as I like the black too,but can't go wrong with either.

I managed to get a no lock M442 in May. I installed a set of #405 LaserGrips and never looked back. I sold my early issue 360 with a lock and never missed the 3 ounce difference. If one is looking for either a 442 or 642 and can get the no lock version, there's no reason not to.Bob

They sure must have had a whole bunch of discontinued lock free frames.....huh? ;)

I have both a 642 and a 442. The 642 utilizes a "clear coat" finish that wears off easily, leaving blotches of both coated and uncoated finish. The 442 finish is not blueing, but a black matte finish on the cylinder and a black anodize on the frame. This has held up way better for me; both have been used as pocket pistols.

I won a set of the 305s on a gunbroker auction. Should have them early next week. I tried the 305s on a 340 pd and they were great.

Definitly post a range report! Bought a no lock 442 a few months ago breaking my no alloy J frame rule. Recoil with the lighter gun is not bad compared to my steel framed Centennials, shoots right well too! Enjoy!
